Thanks for the link. The Camptown site wasn't up yet the last time I checked. It's nice to have this one available for the list now.
It's been added to this and the main section now.

I don't know. Does anyone else still love the Herbert Johnson hat from Raiders like i do? I think i'm gonna go with that one. To be honest, I've always wanted an HJ, but unfortunately, HJ seems to be a case of "they don't make 'em like they used to". I do love the HJ from Raiders, after all THAT HJ is THE Raiders hat. But today's HJ is not the same. That's not to say an HJ couldn't be made to look like the Raiders hat, as I've seen at least one "modern" HJ that was passable as a Raiders, but for the money, there might be better options out there that cost much less, depending on how you'd plan on using it. As a costume piece, or as part of a static display, I'd say go for the HJ if you've got a few hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket and feel up to the challenge of making an HJ looks "Raiders" (as I said, I've seen it done...once). But if you're planning to wear the hat with any frequency, I'd look into other options, based on MANY reports I've read over the years of folks having LOTS of problems with the HJ's shrinking and tapering. Remember, if you're actually going to wear the hat, then what brand Indy wore is irrelevant...what matters MOST is what hat will work best FOR YOU. Are you planning on an HJ from Todd's Costumes or going directly to the source and buying one from Swaine, Addney and Brigg (SAB) in England, or possibly the modified HJ from Magnoli? (possibly your best bet if you want a Raiders HJ, as it has the correct block, though I must confess, the few that I've seen haven't looked overly "Raiders" to me. ) Anyways, no matter which way you go, don't forget to post some pics! -GCR

I don't know. Does anyone else still love the Herbert Johnson hat from Raiders like i do? I think i'm gonna go with that one. Actually No. I had one of Todd's HJ's which I passed on to another member here......well ex-member. I also have one of the 2 HJ's that Marc Produced. I did not care for the assembly of the Todd's HJ. Way too many stitches showing both from where the sweat was sewn in and where the ribbon is attached to the crown. In a nutshell I don't think the Todd's was able to hold a Raiders look for very long. The one from Marc is much better due to Marc's blockshape. Unfortunately Marc will not be making any more of these. That being said I prefer Beaver felt over Rabbit at this point but that's just me. When you get your HJ I hope that it is all that you want it to be. Todd's HJ: Marc's HJ: [ Cheers, G-MANN

Well I was going to go with Todds HJ mainly because it was a bit more convinient. I had also looked into the Adventurebilt fedoras but i'm so fond of the Raiders HJ hat that i think it's the best way to get it. So I'm still on the fence. I've only recently become an Indy gear collector. I have one of the $55 fedoras from Disney. I like it, but it's kind of shameful to compare it with some of THE hats. So I'm looking to get something I can wear proudly with my newly ordered Wested Raiders Jacket, and my authentic MK VII Bag. Here are some pics of me and my DL Fedora and my bag in Roatan, Honduras. although, I wasn't much of a grave robber. Yeah, I know it's a cheap hat, but like i said, only recently become a collector. So I'll do some more research into where I can get a good, long lasting HJ. Thanks GCR and G-MANN

I want to chime in by saying that I think a HJ would be a bad way to spend $300. The shape is wrong, the felt tapers and shrinks, the ribbon tack points can be seen from 15 ft. away, and the bow looks just awful. It has HJ on the liner, but that isn't worth $3.00 to me let alone $300.
Honestly, I would highly recommend going with almost every other hat listed above in this section before buying a modern HJ. Buy a Magnoli HJ made by Steve if you feel you must have some connection to the company, but you will be disappointed with the regular HJ. It simply does not compare to what you can get for less money elsewhere.
Just my opinion,
Ken

Heck, just put a darker ribbon on the hat you have now and you won't be all that far off from an HJ.

Great pics, lordxhelmetx! "Cheap hat" or not, some would say the hat is unimportant...it's what you do while wearing it that matters most. I owned a couple of the wool-felt, Disney bought, Dorfman Pacific fedoras back in the 90's, and they both accompanied me on more than a few little "adventures". They make excellent starter hats, that much is for sure. Best of luck with the HJ...and before I forget, welcome to the Lounge! -GCR

I would say don't go with the HJ either. It will look like your disney hat in no time. I would say get a Akubra and place you order for a Ab or AB delux. The only thing the current HJ has in common with the HJ Raiders hat is the name.

If you simply must have an HJ, the Magnoli version is probably your best option. But honestly, if you're willing to spend that kind of money and you want a hat that will last a lifetime, look no further than AB. Yeah, you gotta wait a long time, but if you order now, you can use what's left over from your HJ money to buy a Federation in the meantime!

I'm looking to buy a new fedora. I've finally decided to get either a Miller hat or a Camptown 1936 "Fieldmaster."
Does anyone here own either or both of these? Because I could really use some advice so to which one might be better.

Because I could really use some advice so to which one might be better. -Josh I've owned two Millers and they were very decent hats in their day. In my experience they were a couple steps up from other factory made hats in the same price-range (like modern Stetsons). I wore one of my Millers a LOT for 3 years before it really began to shrink and taper. When it did, it shrank and tapered BADLY, but it responded to my homemade reblock fairly well so I'd bet if you owned one and it did shrink, you could have it reblocked with relative ease. Anyways, the Miller were fine hats but they do miss the mark on some of the more accurate details (lack of dimensional cut brim, ribbon is 1/4 inch too wide and the wrong color, the felt color is a bit too red). The Camptowns also seem like decent hats (though I've never owned one) but you should be forwarned that they are not intended to be exact replicas of Indy's fedora, so they also miss the mark on a few details. The Camptowns are a rabbit / beaver blend, so the felt is probably nicer than the regular rabbit felt of the Miller. I'm not sure about the brim width details on the Camptown, but I think they come VERY wide. If you're dead set on one of these two, then I'm not sure what advice to give. For me it'd be a toss-up. The Camptown might be a better hat, but I've owned the Miller so I feel a bit more comfortable with that familiarity. If you're NOT dead set on either of these, then I would also suggest you hold out for one of the newly revised Federations that should be available in the next few months, OR maybe look into a Keppler (same rough price range as the Miller but more it has more of the details correct). If I were in your shoes, I would hang onto my money until I see what Hatsdirect comes up with for their new Federation. I have a feeling that might become the hat to beat in the "under $200" price range. -GCR

I regularly wear my Miller during the cold season...it's holding up great against the elements... In what way will they be revised ? Shape, color ?

I regularly wear my Miller during the cold season...it's holding up great against the elements... In what way will they be revised ? Shape, color ? First off, Stef, that's an awesome pic of a fedora in some real world action! As far as the Federations go, I'm only going by the buzz at other sites. From what I understand, Ron at Hatsdirect is working with Akubra to revamp the Fed line, using adjusted brim specs and a new blockshape (well, technically an old blockshape) that dates back to pre-WWII. The new block is supposedly more accurate to the Indy specs we all know these days, primarily in terms of crown height, which will be right around 5 1/2 inches open crown. (One complaint a lot of folks have had about the Feds is that they are a bit too tall, with most starting at 5 3/4 inches open crown and getting taller from there) I'm not sure on the color, felt quality, or anything else yet. It's been a while since I checked the other site for updates on this. -GCR

Well, I'm probably going to have to wait, since I still don't have a job. I might wait for the new Federation. I think I'd get a new ribbon for it, though. Unless they change the current design, too. Thanks for the responses, guys. -Josh

Yeah, I'd wait to see the new Fed. I hear that they are going to try to alter the color as well. Also, I believe the Fed Deluxe will be updated as well.
Fusion, if the new Feds don't tickle your fancy, I would say that Camptown is better than Miller over all. They normally come with a wide brim, but for extra $ they will trim and modify the hats. The only thing is, Camptown is having some personal problems right now that could put his business in trouble. So, your chance to get a brand new Camptown may not last much longer.
