Well, I'm probably going to have to wait, since I still don't have a job. I might wait for the new Federation. I think I'd get a new ribbon for it, though. Unless they change the current design, too. Thanks for the responses, guys. -Josh Hey Josh, out of curiousity, are you talking about changing the ribbon because of the bow style, or the ribbon color or what? If it's the bow, there are ways to tweak it without having to remove the whole thing. It still won't be perfect, but it will be much better. Plus, keep in mind, they may revamp the look of the bow on these as well, if they're going to bother with updating everything else, anyway. -GCR

And if I do get a new Federation, and if they don't change the current style, then I'd be interested in tweaking it. -Josh

You know, I've always been interested in Magnoli's Herbert Johnson fedoras. However, I've never seen anyone mention these hats at this forum. Does anyone own one of these hats? I am rather curious. I would probably never get one of these, since Steve's AB is about the same price... give or take fitty bucks. That's right, I said fitty! ;D BTW, I like your new avatar, Griff. It's cool. -Josh

Actually, wait…I take that back…I think Tiberius Jones has one, but other than him I can’t think of anyone else. Marc announced his custom HJ offering right around the same time, and it was a bit less than what Magnoli was charging. The lower price, along with Marc’s spotless reputation for quality (it was not common knowledge that Steve would be making the hats for Magnoli right away) led a few of us here at the lounge to order one of his HJ offerings (myself included). I ended up switching my order later on to another AB Deluxe (glad I did, as the new ABD is my most favorite hat EVER!) but I believe G-MANN got one of Marc’s custom HJ’s. Anyways, if I had to choose between an AB or a MagHJ, I’d go for the AB myself, just because it’s probably got a longer lifespan, though I would still love to add an HJ to my collection someday. By the way, Josh, thanks about the Avatar! -GCR

Here I am! I do indeed have the Magnoli HJ. Keeping in mind that this is just one man's opinion... This HJ is indeed as good as any HJ will ever be. I think the AB, being tougher as well as beaver felt, is a much better hat for the money, though. That said, if you really need to scratch the HJ itch (much like I did), this hat is the best option. You get everything that's good about an HJ combined with Steve's craftsmanship. My main gripe is that, having gotten it open crowned, it refuses to hold the more subtle details of a good Raiders bash, and the brim needs frequent nudging to keep a nice swoop. The hat is too soft. But I've seen photo's of these that came pre-shaped, and they hold their shape much better. There is something to be said for experience and a workshop! My advice for anyone who wants open crown; ask for a touch extra stiffener. This will allow you to "train" the hat before working out the stiffener with use.

Thanks for the reply, Tiberius. I would love to get Steve/Magnoli's HJ, but I'd rather have an AB... who am I kidding, I can't afford either of them. I've still got my eye on that Camptown Fieldmaster. -Josh

Hey everyone, I am still looking to get myself a nice Indy hat and was thinking of one of the Herbert Johnson hats from Magnoli or possibly an AB deluxe. I went to the AB Deluxe web page and wasn't sure if I read the price right, are they really almost $600 USD? I mean, it looks like a great hat and I heard nothing but great things about them, but I just can't see myself spending $600 on a hat.
Any advice or words anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

Any advice or words anyone can give me would be much appreciated. You could always try Penman Hat Co. Or.... next month Marc's "Henry" factory made hats should be ready to ship. Cheers, John

Hmmm, a Penman might be the answer!
How well can a Penman hold up in, say, rain? Not saying I am going to wear it in monsoons or anything, but if I get caught in some rain, well it completely ruin it? I don't know anything about hats...

JP's hat's are Beaver so they will hold up to some rain but almost any felt fedoras are prone to some taper if they go through enough bad weathering. Especially excessive water and or heat.
Marc's hats [AB Deluxe] are an exception due to his aging process that kills the felt. They can take anything you put them through and come out with flying colors.
Cheers, John

The two Adventurer hats are made by Christy's of London and the fur-felt version can be bought here for only $100 bucks: www.hornetshats.com/f_hatview.php?link=link6It seems to be a pretty decent option for an Indy hat if you don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm not sure how the quality / durability rates on these, but many folks are comparing them to modern HJ's, though it's possible the Christy's may be a notch or two above by some accounts.

eBay: Indiana Jones hat Fedora adventure brown halloween
Just got the hat...if you want a cheap(er) Indy style hat that beats the Dorfman-Pacific hands down..this hat is for you.
It is actually, an Italian (made by Alberto Celini Collection) Untouchable model that the company (or seller) has done a quite adequate Indy bash to it.
The hat is medium, stiff wool felt, and is satin lined, with a leather (ette) hat band. The major difference in this hat from a true Indy (besides the wool felt) is that the brim is not quite as large, and is not tapered on the sides. Also, the brim edge is a fold over stitch, not raw.
But..those things aside, it IS a pretty nifty hat that will look like a real Indy hat to anyone but the purist.
The hat is on eBay for starting bid of $40. (BIN $50.) ONLY $4.80 Shipping! (USA) and is offered in dark brown, "mocha", and with or without "distressing".
I got the hat distressed for an extra $15. but I would not do it again... save your $$ and do it yourself. The seller merely dusted the hat with some powder (Talc?) which easily comes off when rubbed.. I sprayed some Scotch-guard waterproofing to keep it set.

BTW:
The pics were taken BEFORE I wiped off and re-distressed the hat.
Also, the pics make the hat look more dusted than in person...

I got one of the Oil Canvas "Rugged" Fedora's from HatsInTheBelfry.com a few months ago. So far, it has proven to be a very nice hat. I've had loads of compliments and comments about it being from "That Indiana Jones movie". I only paid about $50 for it. They also have wool felt, fur felt, and beaver fur fedoras too. They are very nice hats in my opinion. Has anyone heard about them?

I saw a Dorfman-Pacific oil canvas Indy hat for around $35. It looked ok, but what i didn't like was the wire in the brim..it always got bent and looked stupid...
I think the main thing that screams the INDY "look" is the tight, pinched front bash. You need a hat with at least a 41/2 -5" crown ht. to have it look right. The "normal fedoras have too small ofa crown ht. IMO. Also the brim need to be at leat 2 1/2 " around. 3" is better.
The dimensional cut is more accurate, but not as noticeable.
My Indy hat above is far from accurate, but looks more like an Indy hat than any other hat under $100. (except maybe the wool felt Fed IV hat offered by HatsDirect.com @ $89.00)

There is a wool-felt version of the Christy's Adventurer that looks pretty good for even less than the FED. I think the Movieshop.com sells that one. But anyways, I just wanted to clarify about the 89 dollar FED being a true fur-felt hat (and good quality wild hare fur, by the way) not wool.

To my knowledge Hatsdirect will not bash an open crown hat at the customer's request. Don't worry about it, though, because bashing a hat is honestly MUCH easier than most people think. Plus, if you bash it yourself, then you will be able to customize it to better fit your face and features. Ever since I learned how to bash a hat, I could not imagine buying a hat that someone else has bashed for me, no matter how nice of a job they might do. There are quite a few tutorials out there that can explain the finer points of hat-bashing for you.
