You can also buy fedoras at the herbert johnson website. Or did they go out of business. www.herbertjohnson.com

If you're in Europe you might want to check out www.advintagefedora.deThomas has been in the movie replica business for a long time and has recently started offering his own hand made hats. I've seen some of them reviewed on the German forum and they do seem to be very nice hats. And Thomas is definitely a stand up guy - I bought several HJs from him a few years back, and even my first David Morgan bullwhip. A nice guy to deal with.

If I were to get a Penman hat, which would be the best to go for?

You can't possibly go wrong with a Penman. Each and every one of his hats is a winner in my book (I own 3 with a 4th on the way!). So knowing what kind of hat you want depends on what style of hat you want. Do you want the tight fron pinch and the turned brim of the Raiders hat? Or the slightly smaller crown and narrower brim and relaxed front pinch of the Last Crusade hat? Or a slight mix of both (in my opinion it is) of the Crystal Skulls hat? I picked those 3 because they are my favourite. Either way, it's your choice! Just know that when you go with a Penman hat you can't go wrong!

It really depends on what you want and how much you're willing to spend. This would determine what type of felt to get. What hat do you want, Raiders? TOD? LC? CS?
John could help you on this.

I definitely want a Raiders, but the thing is I'm a bit confused by the site. When I click on Indy hats, there's only one, the raiders kind. when I look at pricing, he also lists the Henry, which I know is also a good hat. Are they the same ones?

The Henry is the Factory Adventurebilt hat that I sell for Steve and Marc of Adventurebilt. Its an offering so people can get a good Indy hat with a shorter wait time than a fully handmade hat by myself or the Ab guys.
Right now the Raiders hat is showing in the section called Indy's closet but if you follow the link to my facebook page you will find photo albums of the different styles of Indy hats.

Out of those options, I would go with the Akubra. It's easily the toughest hat out of the bunch.

Out of those options, I would go with the Akubra. It's easily the toughest hat out of the bunch. I totally agree. Here's an example: I bought a "reject" adventurer a while back from david morgan. Basically it's a regular adventurer but with a feather and wider ribbon. It was a good price and I figured I'd use it as my "practice" hat and for fishing. I first attempted my Raiders bash and I think I did a pretty decent job. But it was so stiff, the "turn" never took. In other words, that shape never conformed to my head and always returned back to it's original oval head shape. So I got tired of constantly having to turn the hat on my head and decided to give it a more CS bash. I popped out the bash and of course there were creases. I used a littl bit of steam to get those creases out and it worked. But me being the UNTRAINED perfectionist that I am, I kept steaming and shaping and steaming and shaping. Eventually I was left with an Akubra that resembled a Dorfman from Disneyland! Which isn't a bad hat (I had two of them!). But out of frustration (even though it was a practice hat) I wanted to see just how much abuse an Akubra could take. So I sat on it.....REPEATEDLY......STOOD ON IT.....CRUMPLED IT in my hands.....turned it INSIDE OUT....and beat it up like a gorilla tossing luggage! After a good sweat....I bashed it and guess what.....THE DARN HAT STILL LOOKS GOOD! And it's STILL not even close to being soft! So the moral of this story is this: You can pretty much throw anything at an Akubra and it will take it....just don't add steam to your torture test because it WILL shrink and taper! Unless a Temple of Doom hat IS what you're after. Happy Hat-Hunting!

I was surfing today and stumbled across an Akubra "Adventurer". This looked a lot darker and i think the brim is wider... Does anyone have any dirt on which Akubra is more "screen" accurate to Raiders? Thanks again! OH if i wasnt clear its- "Federation IV" VS "Adventurer"

Bit scared to how im going to bash it though. ROTLA, TD, LC, KOTS, im spoilt for choice. But the company says its most like KOTCS so i may have to bash it like that one. Not that i know what that exactly is.

As long as it looks like Indy's hat. Steven

Steven Ok Ive seen a youtube vid of how to do it. It dont look too hard, but i will be nervous. But the hat is tough so im sure i cant go wrong. Just a case of how big the dents will be on top and will my head touch the roof of the hat or dent, if the dent is real big. The pinch seems a bit more straight forward to me. But i suppose i have to curve the brim down as well.

I saw a Dorfman-Pacific oil canvas Indy hat for around $35. It looked ok, but what i didn't like was the wire in the brim..it always got bent and looked stupid... I think the main thing that screams the INDY "look" is the tight, pinched front bash. You need a hat with at least a 41/2 -5" crown ht. to have it look right. The "normal fedoras have too small ofa crown ht. IMO. Also the brim need to be at leat 2 1/2 " around. 3" is better. The dimensional cut is more accurate, but not as noticeable. My Indy hat above is far from accurate, but looks more like an Indy hat than any other hat under $100. (except maybe the wool felt Fed IV hat offered by HatsDirect.com @ $89.00) The $89.00 FED IV is made of Fur-felt. To my knowledge there is no wool-felt version of the Fed IV. There is a wool-felt version of the Christy's Adventurer that looks pretty good for even less than the FED. I think the Movieshop.com sells that one. But anyways, I just wanted to clarify about the 89 dollar FED being a true fur-felt hat (and good quality wild hare fur, by the way) not wool. I dont think it is a christys, rather a movie shop ltd hat. I was thinking of getting it but they havent got my size. Im 57 there smallest is 58

Ken, can you add Steele and Jones as well? They make a very well made fedora in all 4 film styles as well as the grey travel hats. They are great people to deal with!! Their link is www.steele-jones.com.ar/en/home.htmThanks!
