I got my very first fedora from a substitute when I was 7 or 8. It was a dorfman (i didn't know there were better options). He asked if I would come to his room after school, and so I did. He took me out to the hall. He planted it on my head and I just about fainted. (I only got it for knowing what type of hat it was!) That hat is long gone now (dog troubles) but I have since replaced it with this wool dorfman. i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee498/DausinDavis/SAM_0439.jpgI have rebashed it as well. It also seemed to have taken on a more brownish color as well, which is odd. I soaked it three times before putting in the bash. I tried to angle the brim to Raiders style, it worked...for the 15 hours after I did it I haven't got a pic of my job yet but I must say I did a pretty bang-up job. I did a Raiders bash of course. I am glad to say that I will soon be getting a (place fur felt here when decided) felt Raiders hat from Watson's Hat Co. (not dissing any other hat maker) Their hats are GREAT, I saw no threads about their hats here though. I will post one when I get it. His customer service is EXCELLENT, I may add.

Having someone tell you they will replicate (not duplicate) every nook and cranny detail of something is very different from having the final product in hand actually live up to such a bold promise. I'm not saying it won't happen, just that such a thing isn't likely.
Best of luck,
Ken

Right. I fixed that. By the way, Watson's sells rabbit and beaver. Trying to decide between them.

How much is the beaver and is it pure beaver?

$425, but the hatmaker will generously give you a discount if you ask him, before ordering, and give him a testimonial. Yes it ssaid on his site that his felt is 100% pure beaver.

...How does a 12-year old acquire an SA whip and a $300 hat?!?!? I'm 16 and I don't even have a cheapo Rubie's whip!!! Steven

If you're referring to the Caicedo whip, then ask California Jones. He gave the whip to me for free since he had bought many other whips this year. Thanks, California by the way. As for the hat, I get more money than you'd think. ATTITUDE goes a long way. according to my parents

Are you actually going to buy it this time? Or just say you will, open many threads asking about it and comparing (and insulting) it to others before apparently not buying it at all?
I say this because up to now, this has happened about 3-4 times? You open a thread saying "I'm buying XXX-hat, what do you all think?", then you proceed to insult most of the opinions offered, and the hat maker, and then you go all quiet and the deal quietly drops off...
Attitude does go a long way...But from what I've seen so far, yours isn't the type of attitude to gain favours (or 300+ dollars) from parents...But then, maybe my parents were insanely strict eh?
Care to let us know what it is you're ACTUALLY planning on doing and what the odds are of it ACTUALLY happening this time?
Regards.

Depends on the felt I choose to be honest fifth. But without a doubt I will get a hat from Watson's. I need a new hat (look to first post for proof) By the way I will take pics of my rebashed dorfman later on today. I'd say that I am certainly able to get enough money for both types of felt, because I can save a bit longer than usual,I just have to convince mom and dad that it's not a waste of money.

If it's equally possible to get both types of felt, I'd recommend the Beaver...Since it'll last longer than a rabbit...If the shape is okay, and if it's the hat you LIKE, then buy it....Asking our opinions is all well and good..But we all have different ones, and NONE OF US know what you like and what looks good on YOU, so chose yourself using us as a very rough guide...
Rabbit is cheaper, Beaver lasts better and costs more...I prefer Beaver, and I've had experience of both...Rabbit is more "SA", but Beaver is more realistic for a long term hat that you can wear everywhere, everyday...
Use all of that but chose your OWN style, felt and maker...

Watson's may be a great hat maker but the raiders block shape is an unusual one and I'd be surprised if they can replicate that with a stock block. All the Indy hat makers of note have taken a lot of effort getting a good block shape. It's much more straight sided than most post 30's blocks

I'm sure all the hard working people here who may struggle for money will be encouraged and entertained by your hand-out attitude to life.

When I first started posting here, my dad had to check every post I wanted to make before I posted it. Perhaps Bullwhip should do the same. On a side note, I remember the second thread I started here. I posted it without dad's permission. The thread still infuriates me to this day. Steven

I didn't say I deserved it, I was just saying that I could save up and get a hat easily.

Why are you so keen on getting a Watsons hat now?! Fifth is right, you have been jumping on every new hat you see, saying you are FOR SURE getting this hat! And then it doesn't happen. Whatever happened to getting a Garrison? Why do you think a Watsons hat is better than a Garrison?
To be honest, I looked at the pictures you posted on COW of the hat made by Watsons. For the money, it looks terrible. I am a hat guy so I can spot the things that make a quality hat. For starters, the pounce job looks terrible. A hat of that price should be a little bit more smooth and not so fluffy! It almost looks like Velcro. And the trimming looks like it was eyeballed, as it is pretty rough, like it was cut from a dull scissors.

Just in case anyone is wondering, Bullwhip Jones or whipless01 (the screen name he used when originally signed up), deleted his own account earlier this evening.

I'm pretty sure it was because we put too much pressure on top of him, and he couldn't stand it. I think we really shouldn't have been so hard on him, in any of the threads he annoyed us in. I didn't even participate in the Bullwhip Bashing until this thread, and now, I regret every word (and picture) of it.

Well we tried over and over again to give him good advice, but he kept refusing to even take a look at our advice. He just kept saying he was going to get this, was going to get it no matter what, but wanted opinions about it. And then he would change his mind for seemingly no reason at all and go in a different path, again asking for our advice but refusing to accept it.
We tried helping him out. We tried to inform him of ways to get the best for his money, and actually save him money in the long run. We did everything we could for him but it was always up to him to accept our advice. He is on his own now.

Quite honestly, I think he enjoys messing people about...Hence the multiple postings on similar topics, multiple user names and insulting threads leading nowhere...
If he's really just a young kid being a little crazy about posting EVERYTHING on his mind, well, then I'll say sorry to him for being so short tempered...But there have been several times when he's acted much older...And I happen to think that it's just games he enjoys playing...
I'm sure he'll be back..Steven, don't beat yourself? People stay or leave according to what is going on in their heads..And if he doesn't want to be here, that's fine..It's not our "fault" at all...If he thought about what he was saying more, and acted like what we said was noticed, he'd never have gotten upset enough to leave....
Some people are just a little strange, and while I do tolerate them posting, they should at least attempt to show basic social skills while here...It's not too much to hope for. (Even for a 12 year old.).
Regards.
