Here's the text from the story link above, regarding what they were unhappy with:
Shia LaBeouf told the Los Angeles Times that he shares some of the blame for the failures of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" - but he is also pointing the finger at the monkeys he was forced to swing through the jungle with.
"I feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished," Shia told the Los Angeles Times' 24 Frames blog when asked about the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie while in Cannes over the weekend. "You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on [director] Steven [Spielberg]," he continued. "But the actor's job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn't do it. So that's my fault. Simple." The actor went on to emphasize that he believes that modern audiences are hard to fool.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Shia is not the only "Indiana Jones" star who was less-than satisfied with the movie. "We [Harrison Ford and Shia] had major discussions. He wasn't happy with it either," he also told the Los Angeles Times, referring to the movie the movie that grossed over $786 million worldwide. "Look, the movie could have been updated. There was a reason it wasn't universally accepted... I'll probably get a call. But he needs to hear this. I love him. I love Steven."
It's about time someone involved in the making of that travesty, offered up a few of the opinions most of the world can agree with. I've only seen KOTCS one time and it was one time too many, to be honest. Hopefully Lucas and Spielberg are taking notes for any Indy 5 they might greenlight in the future.

Do you know the things I hate most about CS? The CGI and the negative reviews! Obviously it's not the best Indy flick ever (at least it's no ToD), but neither was BTTF 2, and that was a pretty good movie. I loved the part where Indy and Marion were married at the end. And when Mutt was picking up the hat, thinking "Hey, maybe I'll be the next great adventurer!" and Indy took it back, thinking back "Not today, kid!" ;D I agree, it need some serious remastering. No, it needs a remake! It'd better be George's son in charge of the CGI, because if it's not, I'll sue him. When I'm old enough. AHHH! I'm letting the negative comments influence me again!

Steven No, I think your observations about the movie tell alotmore about how you feel about it, rather than how you "want" to feel about it. Let's face it, the first three Indy movies had things to complain about as well. However, I wager that even the worst parts of the first three movies were better than the best parts of KOTCS. That said, I fault nobody for liking it at all. We all have our own opinions about things and even if the whole world thinks differently, your own opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to what you like or don't like. Ken

i honestly thought it was pretty good. it was all historically and chronologically correct. the script was good and the actors are amazing. the crew was near to origional and had a terrific (and funny) ending. what went wrong? special effects? costume design? i never really knew why people made a fit about it haha

Thanks much! I never had the most screen accurate collection of items, simply because close enough was good enough for me with most of it anyway. The ultra high prices of some pieces of gear had a little something to do with that too. Regardless, all of that stuff has been sold for quite some time now... except for the G&B Expedition jacket. As for the movie and what went wrong... in my opinion, the much shorter list would be... what went right? Ken

My brother saw it before I did he hated it with a passion. I decided to wait until it was on DVD so I could get his critisizm out of my head and see it with out looking for all the bad things he had talked about (monkeys)
IT WAS BRUTAL TO WATCH! I TURNED IT OFF AFTER THE ANTS!
Since then I have had some time to think about what I didn't like or what was so wrong with the vibe of the movie. I concluded that the reason it came across as a spoof to me was that It wasn't an "Indy against the odds" kind of story. In CS It seemed like an ensamble cast style movie. It was like Indy was either equal to or lesser than any of the other cast members.
It looked like everybody was having a lot of fun, but that doesn't make a good movie.
It looked like it was filmed in Ed Wood's old movie studio. Indiana jones should be filmed on location if possible! In the 80's we couldn't tell if the trees were plastic, but in 2010 plastic trees look bad in high def. Then again, what the hell do I know I hated the new STAR WARS movies too.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME?!?! I thought that KotCS was twice as good as you guys say it is (I'm not saying it was excellent: you're giving it a 1/4 and I'm giving it a 1/2). AND I thought that the Star Wars Prequels were good too. The CGI was actually pretty good in Episode I (But that's just because of the combination of how young I was when I first saw it and the fact that most of the CGI stuff was either an outer-space backdrop or a chrome starship, both of which CGI does very well). Bottom Line, I'm being revealed to things about the KotCS I have never noticed before that only make me like it worse and worse. I'm tired of liking it. No, I'm not. Am I? Steven

I think KOTCS could have been better . It wasn't what I thought from watching the trailers . The CGI was ok but now every movie has it and is over done .I think the stunts with out CGI made the first movie the best. The other thing is why didn't use the whip more? They had a great whip master with Anthony De Longis teaching Ford . When i first read the he was doing the movie I was thinking the movie will be good ,finely get to see great action with indy and the whip. But no it was lame, small scene in the beginning of the movie then is put on his side the rest of the movie . Hopefully KOTCS will be a stepping stone to a better movie in Indy 5 , cause ending all the movies on KOTCS was kind of disappointing. But I sill have the movie in my collection !!!

Yes it's funny how this time around when fan's want more from movie makers especially from Lucas&Spielberg and INDIANA JONES!!!!! as a action hero he only used his whip once and pulled out his webley once!!! that's not the INDIANA JONES I growed up with hopeful next time they get it right !!!

Yet ANOTHER thing I've never noticed about CS: he only uses his ICONIC weapons ONCE. It's like only having your character (who HAS the ability to walk) walk once and never again. Indy didn't even FIRE his gun.
WAIT! Just realizing this: Indy used the whip twice. The first at the beginning to swing on, and the second while the portal to another dimension was sucking Mac up. It's still not enough, though.
Come on, Doc, put Time Travel to good use! GO BACK TO DECEMBER OF 1992 AND CHANGE INDY 4!

Yea, your rite . I forgot about the second time. There was supposed to be scene where indy whips Mutts switchblade out of the cemetery warrior's hand . But i guess it didn't work out in the final scene . There would have been little more whip play.

I saw a Hollywood blog thread back 07 that they were think about using C.G!!! to animate Ford with a whip rather than letting use a real one so he wouldn't hurt himself

That would have been terrible . Glad they let him use it even if it was just a small part. We need to get back to action and stunts like raiders . He was good with the whip then , I have a old movie stunts and making of raiders VHS hosted by Ford, and it shows him using the whip in practice and that would better then the small stuff in KOTCS!!

How could Shia say something horrible like? Kotcs was totally AMAZING! I thought it was just as good as the raiders, and crusade, though Temple is my all time fav!
if adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones! (including Kotcs!)

Lifelong Indy fan here (hell, I was 11 when Raiders came out lol).
Loved Raiders and The Last Crusade. Liked Temple of Doom.
Here it comes.....
Actually liked Kingdom. As much as the others? Nope. The weakest of the four but still an entertaining film.
Where did it go wrong?
1. The first half was fun and felt like the other Indy adventures. The second half, not so much. Not big on the giant ants or monkeys at all. Felt too cartoonish (like the awful Phantom Menace and so so other prequels...come on George.) 2. Eh, Mutt was average and not as annoying as I thought he would be. 3. Mac was a throwaway character. Forget the double agent nonsense and put Sallah in the movie somehow.
I liked it. The Alien thing was cool. If you think Aliens are far fetched, I find the previous movie plot devices more far fetched (Ark, Grail, Knight, Mola Ram's powers, etc.).
It was great to see Indy again but hell, a much better script is needed next time.

LOL the only hope for Indiana Jones 5 is if Lucas stay 1000 yards away at all times especially during hatching the Mc guffin. story line . filming . and editing ;D ;D ;D then it might have a fighting chance to be a good Indy flick

Lucas has lost a LOT of credibility as a film maker over the years and his recent statements regarding Red Tails and his subsequent reasoning behind retiring from making blockbuster films have only furthered his strange ideas on things.
I respect him for creating Indy and Star Wars, but none of these ideas would have become the iconic stories of an entire generation without the collaborative efforts of thousands of people. A fact that Lucas seems to have forgotten over the years.
I didn't care for most of KOTCS, but it was great to be able to see the character in a new adventure on the big screen. I never got the chance to see any of the original trilogy of Indy adventures in the theater so seeing a NEW adventure was a thrill, albeit a disappointing one. So if Indy 5 gets made, let's hope they come up with a strong script that hold's true to the character and sends him off with a worthy finale! (Last Crusade would have been fine with me with them riding off into the sunset.) But considering KOTCS got made, and a possible fifth is in the works, let's hope Spielberg and Ford can reign Lucas in and they can make a modern Indy movie worthy of the title!
