This is something I have discussed more than once with more than one member here. My opinion is that the color of Indy's holster has absolutely NO red or orange tint to it. Every holster I have bought with the exception of my old WWI Webley has had that Orange tint. So I took it upon myself to find a solution. I found a Melotonian leather spray color that I think has worked perfectly. The color is Coffee and is very shiny at first. I had to knock the shine down with little light rub with alcohol and then a light rub down with fine steel wool. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Cheers, G-MANN

Wow, great results on that one, John! I was wondering how that was going to look. I'll have to try that on my Western Stage Props holster...that thing is takes the cake as far as orange holsters go. Great work! -GCR

Looks good, John. I did the same for my Keppler some time ago. It WAS the color of an orange-red Crayon.

Thanks Griff and Jason.
I thinks the original color of the holster was close to what you see on the way into the temple in the begining of Raiders however I have always liked the color as it appears in the photo I posted above.
It may not be totally SA but I'm happy with it.
Cheers, John

I think it looks really good. To be honest I'm not a fan of the orange / red look myself either and I always thought Indy's holster was a darker dirty brown. I've thought about buying Todd's new budget holster because he's made some improvements to them but then I wondered what I would do about the color because I don't have anymore of the leather stain I bought to do the holster I have now. So is the stuff you used available at like Hobby Stores or some place like Wal-Mart? I've never heard of it.

And, already conveniently linked in the appropriate "Where To Buy" sections! ;D The holster looks great John! You know I like the darker, pure brown color for all of Indy's leather items. It's just what leather looks like after years of regular use and exposure to the elements. I plan to put some of my leather gear through some extra steps as well, if I ever get the free time. Nice work, Ken

Thanks Ken.
I just finished doing my gunbelt too so that it is an exact match to the holster. I may try doing one of my bagstraps next.

Wow. That spray really gave it a nice shine. This has always been my problem with my todd's holster is that it never shined the way the film holster seemed to.

Kaplan, Thanks. I am actually working on getting the shine knocked down a bit. I just finished making all the leather gear match. It may not be screen accurate but I like the co-ordinated look for the leather gear. I guess it's just my preferrence as to how I would like my gear to look if I were buying it for daily use. G-MANN, I really like the look the holster has in this new shot!!! That's also a great "mixed gear" shot, by the way The color seems perfect, especially when compared with the rest of the gear. And unlike the techniques I've been using to try and darken up my WSP holster, this method distributes the color evenly and it just looks great! I'm definitely going to have to try this. -GCR

John, I know you said you did this in spite of screen accuracy. But, making the leather goods darker brown without that orange/red color in it is a huge step toward greater screen accuracy. Just as the Aldens make be purchased with that reddish/orange color, we know that's not screen accurate either. I have never seen any piece of Indy's leather goods that were anything but dark browns. So, I think you did a fine job in both pleasing your own tastes and improving the SA level. Ken

Griff and Ken, Thanks for the compliments. I have been working on the holster with steel wool, alcohol and even gave it a rubdown with woodstain. Yes woodstain. ;D I am really happy with the final product now that it looks broken in. Cheers, G-MANN

Great new shot, John! The distressing makes it looks even better! I also like how...wait a minute... ... woodstain? ;D Seriously though, great work! I'm definitely trying the leather spray on my WSP holster, though I may skip the woodstain treatment! -GCR

Holster and Gunbelt complete. Cheers, G-MANN Sweet! Have you noticed any side-effects to using the spray at all? Does it cause any of the color from the leather to bleed off on other things? -GCR

Griff,
No problem with any bleeding or transfer of color to other items. I have rubbed this gear down so many times now that any loose color is gone.
Cheers, John
