cool thread my .02:
If you watch the Raven Bar scene closely, and look at the part where Indy has just ducked behind the pillar (grabs Toht's poker, 'let her go', fires, runs, fires twice, makes it to cover behind pillar) you will see him make the switch to the semiauto which is in the waist band of his pants. Later there are continuity errors where the two guns are switching out (not easy to see) but there is a split second of him switching guns.
Also, sometimes when manufacturers (and more commonly, DIY reloaders) are making ammo, they double charge a casing. That is, they accidentally put a powder charge in twice, then put on the slug. Sometimes it can blow your gun up, but sometimes it doesn't. I fired one of these rounds (I suspect) out of a Ruger single action once. It was a Winchester factory load, and of course the Ruger was fine, but I could definitely tell something weird had happened. So maybe that's what happened in LC with the Walther. Indy certainly seemed to think something odd had taken place and after all, he's fired plenty of 9mm ammo. If the round showed up right when he needed, well, isn't that how his luck usually runs anyway?

I never thought about the double charge thing, but its is possible. I know I've seen it happen. I read a while back that during WWII the Germans produced some 9mm ammo with an iron core to conserve lead. This might give some added penetration. Of course LC took place before this ammo went into production, but they had MP-38's and MP-40 in Raiders. I'll have to watch the Raven scence close again and look for the switch.
