Here's a pic of some of my favorite handguns. On the right you'll see a Brazillian contract 1917 S&W with some recently added reproduciton grips. I generally prefer Colt style double action revolvers over the S&W's but this 1917 is incredibly well balanced, accurate, and solid as a rock. In South Carolina, we can carry concealled handguns and the 1917 is one of my favorite carry weapons. It's almost always tucked under my Wested. You might want to remember that.

Wow... nice guns! Did I really just say that to a guy? I'm getting the same feeling I had with the "nice monkey" comment, in another thread. Seriously though... those are nice! Ken

Nice collection! I have that same snub nose Colt laying on my top bunk right now! I've also got a similar Ruger Vaquero. Mine is a .44 mag with a 7.5" barrel. Its a tough call between the Colt and S&W D.A. revolvers. I thought Colt had the upper hand until I got my Mountain Gun. Heck, I love them all!

Wow, great collection. I used to have a Rueger 44 too. That thing was like firing a canon. Cheers, John

I never liked the grip shape on the Vaquero. It's fine for rounds with less recoil, but it would beat you to death with the big .44 mags. I stick to firing .44 Specials in mine.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that you don't like the Vaquero grips. I think they're perfect for heavy loads. I guess we all have to find the ones that fit us best individually. You certainly can't tell from the picture but those are custom Vaquero grips that get slightly wider as it nears the bottom. They're also checkered which helps you keep a firm grip. That particular gun is a 357 and I have fired a variety of heavy loads from Buffalo Bore & Cor Bon in it. But not often! Man, what a noise maker! The Blackhawk above it is a special 45 Colt/45 ACP gun with 2 cylinders. It also shoots 45 Schofield, 45 Colt Magnum, and 45 Super. That's a lot of versatility for a single firearm. I like shooting Schofields and 45 ACP the best.

The grips fit my hand great and they are wonderful for .45 Colt, .357 mag, etc. However, when firing with heavy recoil (.44Mag) I find that the web of my hand is thrown up against the frame. The problem is that I basically have to readjust my grip after ever round. (And it kinda smarts too However, mine has the factory simulated ivory grips. Your checkered grips may make a difference.

Wow Havana, great guns! This is coming from a lady whose only knowledge of guns comes from the Indy trilogy.

Is the S&W a single action revolver?

Is the S&W a single action revolver? The 1917 is a double-action weapon as far as I know. By the way, welcome to the lounge! -GCR

You are correct, sir. The 1917 is definitely a double action revolver. It can, of course, be fired single action, which I always do.
