Ok, ready for this? So I'm looking at whips and I would like a more SA costume. What is the general consensus on him carrying a 10' whip? Is it more than 50% of the film(s) or less? Was the 8' carried as much? I'm looking at it more for that than actual use/cracking. However, I can't see myself ever not picking it up and wanting to "play" with it. I'm thinking the 8' is enough for that reason alone. Even if it's mostly for display and costuming and very little play, better the odds with the shorter whip and inexperience, right? Also, does it really matter on whip length if I'm only 5'7, yeah I'm a short Indy(insert phallic joke here). Am I overthinking this?

S.D.J. -
No one whip is more SA than another. Ford used or carried both lengths you mentioned in the film. And from scene-to-scene where the whip was employed, the length varied as well. However, "Indy-lore" has it that the hero typically carries a 10-footer.
If you are simply using it for costuming purposes more than use (which you will find yourself inclined to try... trust me on this...), then I suggest biting the bullet of the higher cost, and get the 10-footer. That length means that when it hangs from your hip, you'll have one more coil (typically) than you would have with an 8-footer.
Generally when coiled into the circle that hangs from the whip-holder, an 8-foot gives you 3 coils, the 10 gives you 4. And to me, that extra coil is just that much more impressive. However...
...as you seem to be new to the whole whip-thing, and if you DO intend to learn it's use, then I suggest selecting the shorter, 8-foot length, as starting your training with a longer whip is far more challenging than a shorter length. First-timers should first use a six-footer, and increase the length of your whip choices as your skill with the whip improves. Not that you can't learn on a 10-footer (I did)... I just think it takes longer... and it is more challenging. But if it's for looks alone... go for the 10.
Height of the user isn't really an issue, as the whip is used in a horizontal fashion and height is a vertical measurement.

Thanks again for your insight.
I have been leaning towards the 8' for those reasons alone no matter how appealing the 10' is, even if only for costuming purposes, I just don't see myself not wanting to pick it up and crack it lol.
I read a few of the threads on that( newbs learning with the whip lengths) here it's kinda what prompted me to ask in reference to mostly costuming over hardcore whip cracker hobbyist.

Thank you. I am considering one after careful thoughts on the matter, I may take you up on one if you still have them in the next month or so.
ETA: So, another thing I've noticed is that sometimes the handle is on the inside of his leg and sometimes lays on the outside. Was there a reason for this in the films?
The only thing I can think of is it appears is that the handle is on the outside during action scenes and when Indy is just walking around it lays on the inside of his leg.
I'm guessing this was done for freedom of movement reasons and not catching the knot in the groin?
Seems everytime he uses it though, the handle is also on the inside the leg postion too.
Maybe I've been watching the films too much recently lol...
Thoughts?

I know when I'm traipsing around in my gear, that damn turkshead knot, due to it's weight, quite often acts as a Doctor's reflex hammer, smacking me repeatedly for a knee-jerk reflex check and damn-near whacking my kneecap to the point of bruising. I have to be attentive to how far the handle hangs, and I wrap the fall around the coils, so that it stays at a 'just-so' height in the whip holster. I think it's probably pretty accurate that during the high-activity scenes, Ford or his people would have made sure it dangled to the outside of his leg, and not gotten in the way.

HA, nice to see I'm not the only one wondering about it.
There is the part when Marion burns him with the torch it is carried with the handle parallel to the ground...I wonder if anyone has tried to carry it that way with any success when out "adventuring". Offhand though, that's the only time I distinctly remember it being carried that way. Maybe that's just a hazard for the family jewels instead of the knee though.
