I am possibly going to buy a second hand Joe strain 8ft roo hide bullwhip but before any money changes hands I wanted to make sure that it is infact a Joe strain bullwhip. Can anyone identify this whip? I was going to ask for reviews on joe strain but I think he is highly apraised. imgur.com/a/IL2LQ

I'd say yes it is a Strain. Based on: Stands aren't extremely wide, but still Indy accurate. The Way the Wrist loop is, very Strain-esque. Also, where the fall hitch is looks very much like his work. The mostly flat transition knot, most of the Indy whips I've seen made by Strain had that ( most people, myself included, put a bit of roundness on the transition knot for Indy whips, Strain tends to not do this, or do it at a lesser degree ). Shape and coverage of the heel knot. Many of those can be interchanged with whipmakers but all of them together make me think it's Joe's work. And yes, Joe makes very nice whips.

Hi! just shoot Joe Strain himself a message with a pic of the whip, and I am sure he will be glad to confirm if it is one of his. I have emailed him a few times in the past for the very same reason and he was most gracious!

Out of curiosity, I just checked the Northern Whip Co. and it says that all existing orders on the books will be completed in the next three weeks. I hope (gulp) that Joe isn't getting out of the business. I've been planning on getting one of his standard Indy's for a while now. I'll have to call tomorrow to get some information.
Anyone here heard anything about this?
Thanks, Niagra

Yeah he announced on Facebook today ( or was it yesterday? ) that he is no longer accepting orders.

Well..the photos aren't the best.. I will say that if it is a Strain, it's one of the worst I've seen. Normally his butt knots are more rounded and not angular/square looking. The braiding in the handle area has some major differences in strand width - again not typical of Joe - the hitch looks large and ungainly compared to his usual work. The taper of the whip is also not particularly great
But,..the seams look straight - strands generally nice..strand drops not too evident..
I dare say its a decent whip..just doesn't look like the standard I would expect of Strain.

I am pretty sure it is a Strain. Unlike Pagey, I don't think this is a poor sample of his work; the whip looks fine to me. The photos are bad, specially since they were taken with flash, but I am sure the whip will look much better with photos taken in natural light.
I was on the phone with Joe yesterday, and he confirmed he is not taking any more orders, probably for good. He intends to make a few whips on his spare time though, and put them on sale on his Specials page.
Regards,
Bernardo

That's a shame to hear. Years ago I did own one of his whips secondhand, but it wasn't in the style I was looking for. I wish him well with his new job.

He is. It will just be much harder to acquire his work now that he only sells it part time. I saw that he had an 8 ft. Indy on his in stock/ specials page and I'm sure it sold in a matter of minutes.
