Well the first thing is budget. With a limit in mind you can eliminate some hats. The next step is screen accuracy and durability. I recently got my first fedora and it's Todd's new one. It is very nice and came pre bashed which was a bonus. If you are looking for a cheap hat with better quality possibly look to getting a Fed iv.
Hope that helped.

What are you looking for in a hat? And what is your budget?

I agree. It depends very much on your budget.
If you can afford spending a good amount, I'd suggest you get a Penman hat. I have been in search of the perfect hat for many years now. I owned two or three (including the Herbert & Johnson, makers of the original ones for 'Raiders'). I was never entirely satisfied.
I think that the answer to my search may be in John Penman. To date, he seems to be the only person who pays attention to every detail for screen accuracy. He seems to be truly obsessed about the perfect Indy hat, and he replicates each of them for each of the four films.
To me, screen accuracy is of a paramount importance. The right shaping and measurements, and a good quality product. By what I've heard and seen so far, John Penman has all of that on offer.
I have myself ordered a 'Raiders' hat from him. I specifically asked for the same shaping and seen in the 'Ravenwood bar' scene, in Nepal.
I can't wait to get it!
Hope this helps. Just an opinion, though.
Best,
