Fantastic looking hat you got there, Nick! I can see why you'd wear it as much as you do. -Josh

That is one sweet looking fedora you have there, Jnicktem! From all the pics I've seen it looks like Penman does some fine work. What are specs on this hat, anyway?

Thanks Griff! John, in my opinion, is one of the very best hatmakers out there. I would say his work is on par with Steve Delk. And I say that having owned several hats by both makers.
Here are some specs:
Size: 24 1/4" Open Crown: 6" Bashed: 5 1/4" Side Brim: 2 3/4" Front/back Brim: 3"

Glad to hear it. I've owned a couple of Steve's hats myself so I know the kind of workmanship you speak of. In fact, of all the Indy fedoras that I have owned (aside from my two AB Deluxes which are the only two Indy fedoras I still currently own) one of my favorites was a rabbit felt AB that I got from Steve a few years ago. I decided to make the hat a dedicated "Cairo" style fedora, and it worked out pretty well, but unfortunately was a bit too snug for me (I had given Steve a generic hat size rather than an exact measurement ) so I ended up selling it, but it really pulled off the look well. One day, when I have some extra funds in the hat budget, and after I buy my gray ABD that I've been trying to save up for, I'd love to order a rabbit felt Penman and make it a pure SOC fedora.

When it comes to hats, I guess you can count me as a stitch counter. I fully examine each hat as I get it, basically looking at every stitch in the entire hat. It's amazing how a simple thing as a stitch differs so greatly between different hats. When it comes to John and Steve's hats, they are just both of such high quality that even though they have different techniques, they both work extremely well. When it comes to Marc- he is just on a different level. Marc recently sent me a picture of the stitches tacking down the sweatband and liner and I swear if I didn't know better I would think it was done by a machine.
I know John actually offers a SOC rabbit felt fedora. A few people have gotten them and loved it. Although- I myself would LOVE a grey ABD!!! It's actually on my list. I would love one just like the one Marc made to wear at his sisters wedding. I currently have a grey CS AB on order with Steve, so I don't need another one of those.
Sorry for rambling.

No need to apologize for rambling about hats! I've been away from all of this for 2 years...I have some catching up to do! ;D I had a gray ABD on order way back in 2008 but after paying upfront and spending a few months on the waiting list, I had to drop out and get a refund. Tough times were just beginning to set in for me back then, and the stark reality of my financial priorities became painfully clear: paying the mortgage was more important than paying for another hat. However, now that things have begun to stabilize, I've been thinking about a new hat purchase. Another ABD is still far outside my budget for the moment (over 800 bucks! damn exchange rate! ) but a gray Henry sounds rather tempting, as does a nice rabbit Penman, though I would opt to get it open crowned and do the "Cairo-ing" myself. ;D Anyways, that's a sweet looking hat you have there! Thanks for posting!

Nick, I think you got the specs wrong. The brim specs seem right but I don't own a raiders block of 6" tall. Nor would I crease one at 5 1/2" just an FYI buddy.

John- you're probably right- I had a hard time trying to use a measuring tape and eyeballing the crown. I kept thinking that was awfully high... I guess we know now that I was off.

John- you're probably right- I had a hard time trying to use a measuring tape and eyeballing the crown. I kept thinking that was awfully high... I guess we know now that I was off. It's more likely that it's 5 1/2 to 5 5/8 open crown with a creased height at 4 1/2 to 4 5/8. Because of your head measurements and how big of a guy you are I think I bumped you up a 1/8 all around. Not sure , because it's been many, many hats since I made hat one. John
