Howdy all,
I'm looking at the beaver version of each hat and wondering besides the price what the difference is?
Is there anyone that has both? Which would be the more durable or better built option.
Thanks for the help!

They are basically the same. The price difference is because Steve was one of the hatters for Indy 4 (and with that comes a premium) and because Steve got such a huge backlog of orders he needed to raise the prices to put a stop to all of the orders.
I have both, and the quality and workmanship is nearly the same... only a trained eye will notice the differences.

If you don't mind me asking what are the small differences?

Well they are too little for most people (basically...non-hatters) to notice. Each hatter has their own technique when making hats, such as stitching or how they tie the ribbon. Although I must admit John and Steve's work is almost identical.

Well as long as both have great quality it will be a hard choice.
Thanks!

Also it might be worth knowing that Steve has been MIA since around July when he stated he has been very ill but his health was improving. After that no one has heard anything. We can only hope that he is doing well and doing what he can to look after himself.

What if I wanted to use the hat year round in the rain and snow.
Is there anyone you would recommend more then? And would rabbit or beaver be better for all types of weather?

John Penman and Steve Delk use the same felt, so either or would work. And Beaver is the best felt for all kinds of weather.

Ask them. John and Steve are the experts and can figure out the best style to fit your head.

I asked the same question two months ago. I went with the Penman beaver and am wating for it to arrive. I will not see it till christmas or january but i'm told it's well worth the wait. I called John and after i spoke with him,it was easy to get a hat from him. Good luck to you my friend.

Just ordered the penman crusader. It's my favorite movie so had to get the hat;) A wise choice, my friend. You won't be disappointed. I treasure mine. It's the only hat I will ever need. Although, that isn't going to keep me from buying another Penman or a Henry one day. -Josh

my .02 if everyone doesn't mind. Steve gets more for his hats than just being one of the Indy 4 hatters. He deserves more because he is simple fantastic hat maker. He has much more experience than I do and many, many other truly handmade/custom hat makers. I don't warrant the same price because I haven't made as many hats as Steve. I doubt anyone will. The man has mad a staggering amount of hats. I make more than most that you guys and dolls now of but I doubt I will catch up to him. He would have to stop making hats and it would take me a few years to catch up.
Steve at one point was working 16-18 hour days 7 days a week. Thats a lot of hats.

Sorry to hijack, but this seems appropriate enough.
John, Did Steve ever give you his CS block or teach you his secrets for making the CS hat? The one that would make you curse because of the time it would add in making the hat? I ask because I am interested the CS fedora, but it looks like I'll never be able to own another of Steve's and the Deluxe is too much for me.
