John's waiting list is not as long as it seems. It will be there before you know it! Having ordered 5 hats from Penman myself, I know this to be true.

Yours is a loaded Q because everyone has their own op. Obviously, if money is no object, then Penman or AB are the best hats as far a quality goes...
Now as to beaver or rabbit..While beaver is the better felt, I read here sometime back that all the FILM hats were made of rabbit, probably because of the cost factor. SO..if you, as you asked, wanted the truest Indy FILM hat, then rabbit would be your first choice.
After seeing the fantastic Penman bash however, if you are going more for a Raiders hat, i would recommend the beaver, or his high quality felt because the denser, smoother felt you can form a tighter crease. But the later movie hats, the pinch wasn't as tight so you could use a lower quality rabbit. i personally own a couple of FED IV and are very happy with them...I use a steam kettle to form my bashes, and they look great. Since I bought them when the $$ was stronger, the better quality rabbit cost me about $100. !!!

I've had two fedoras from Hatsdirect: an Akubra Federation regular and a Fed IV regular. The first one I still have, currently working to adapt into another style. The Fed IV I gave to my brother after I got my Penman. The Fed IV regular is a fantastic hat. The only disadvantage, is the color is off. It's too dark and more of an almost pale brown. The other thing that might turn you off is the rabbit felt. However, it is one of the better, higher quality rabbit felt available. Especially for the price. As I said before, you CANNOT go wrong with Penman. John's hats are gorgeous! I wore my Last Crusade beaver in a monsoon (well, it rained hard for 2 hours) during a parade. It took a good 30+ minutes before the hat was wet to the core. Water just rolled off until that point. I let it air dry overnight and it still looks as the day I received it. Ultimately it comes down to your preference, but I highly recommend a Penman. Worth the wait. In fact, the wait isn't bad at all until he lets you know he's working on it. ;D -Josh

SO..if you, as you asked, wanted the truest Indy FILM hat, then rabbit would be your first choice. I'll second Jnicktem on that one! all the hats in Crystal skull were made of beaver, in the first 3 it was rabbit felt that was used. Like said before in this thread, beaver is much more durable and dense, rabbit moves more like the first 3 movies, it has that soft feeling about it I personnaly prefer beaver, and the way those ABs looked in CS had me sold from the first moment But if you're not sure between the 2, try maybe a Henry from AB, it was mentionned in the thread earlier. It is a beautiful hat, made of 80% rabbit and 20% beaver, so it reacts very much like a rabbit hat but you get that extra durabilty that the beaver brings. The waiting time is much much shorter than custom made one and if you live in the US you can order it from Penman who, if you ask, will bash it for you, and we all know he's a master at bashing Oh, did I mention that the Henry will also put the price down quite a bit... Regards JM

The waiting is the hardest part, as the man says. Wait until you hear that it's actually on the block - THEN it'll really be hard to wait! haha. All worth it in the end though.
