So I just picked up a Henry from someone on another forum, and I was surprised by the quality of this hat! At first it didn't even seem like it was a factory made hat... not until I really started looking at it. I can now see why Marc thought this hat was good enough to carry the Adventurebilt name! The felt is sooo soft, and the sweatband is top notch! I have only felt this kind of sweatband on vintage hats. It's perfect! When I got the hat, it needed a good brushing. I was told that it has pretty much been collecting dust and it looked like it. After cleaning it up I popped out the bash and hit it with some steam (I know some people say not to steam hats, but it has worked out really well for me!). I managed to get the old bash out, and put in a nice Raiders bash. I am hoping to turn this into more of a Streets of Cairo style hat. I need to work the bash a little more but this is how it looks:

It looks great, you just need to give it some wear and tear!

Thanks guys! I plan on making this hat the one I really abuse. And by abuse I mean wear it in downpours or in places I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing my Penmans or ABDs in. I plan on distressing this one the natural way.

Beatutiful hat jnicktem!!! congrats. The bashing looks great as well! The Henry is a beautiful hat, had mine for a few weeks now and it can take the abuse really well and the more you wear it out in the open the better it looks!

Thanks! It is a great hat. Iam still tweaking the bash little by little. The felt is so soft that it doesn't really hold the tight front pinch very well. It's getting there though.

Well i did a CS bash on mine with quite a tight pinch in the front, worked it with some steam and it does not move at all!!! dont know about the raiders pinch though... but its worth a try with some steam...

That's how I've been working the bash. With some steam. I decided to raise the front pinch a bit and lower the bach. The crown now has more of a Raiders shape... but it really needs a reblock using a more Raiders block. Hey John... wanna sell me a block??

John wins this thread....Quality reply...
On the other hand, perhaps THAT would be a decent project to start some work on Nick? It wouldn't be easy, but making and having your OWN block would be one great learning curve...And if it works, you have something someone like you can ALWAYS use...Or adapt..
Just saying..

I would love to do that... but quite frankly I just don't know where to start and just don't have the time.

I think it'd be brilliant to learn how to make fedoras, but I think about the 3rd time I stabbed myself with a needle trying to sew something I'd pack it in. Heh.

Making a hat is one thing, replicating the Raiders block is another thing. Right now I probably could make a hat, given the tools, supplies, and time necessary for one. Sure it won't be a Penman or an AB, but it would be decent.

Well...It would kick ars@ as a personal project, and if you do it and it works it could provide work in the same vein as the men we all go to for these masterpieces....Not such a bad idea....I'm sure John would help as much as he could without passing on all of it too..And you could be in a job for life...
Worth a good shot no? If you have the time..

The problem is not only the time but the money. I know John had to invest A LOT of money into his hat business before receiving any kind of profit. I just can't do that right now. I would like to learn as a hobby though.

Ahhh....Yeah, it IS a huge leap from the start....
On the plus side though, it is a leap into a fairly small field, which means that if you CAN do it, you become a very valued part of a VERY small group of dedicated artisans...
But...It IS a huge leap at the start...No doubt..
I wonder if John offers "apprenticeship" courses? ;-)
