Went to the Post Office today and took delivery on my fantastic new Penman fedora! A Raiders pure beaver with a snazzy black liner. Opening the box, I felt like Casper Gutman opening the bundle with the Maltese Falcon at the end of that great movie. "Now...after seventeen years!" Heh. I have only two words to describe the hat: "elegant" and as Dr. Penman himself would say, "tuff". The quality is absolutely amazing and the craftsmanship is superb. The hat genuinely feels like it could take anything and everything you could throw at it. It practically bashed itself, as well. I was trying for a straight ahead Idol Grab with the slightly curled up brim sides of a LC or the Mystery of the Blues fedora. I don't know how well I did but I bloody well LOVE this hat. I have a feeling I might have turned the hat a hair too far, but it gives it tons of character. I also sat on it a couple of times to get myself over that feeling of wanting to treat it like a porcelain vase. I'm with John on that one: hats are meant to be worn and worn often. This one will get worn every single day, I can promise you. I took some macro pics to show some detail on the sweatband and bow which are both fantastic. Looking at some of the great Penman pics on Indy Lounge helped me decided on buying one so I thought I'd do any potential buyers out there the same favor. Check it out! John, I can't thank you enough for this incredible hat! Great timing on the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest films ever made and one I was lucky enough to see in the theater at ten years old. Here's to Raiders of the Lost Ark, guys and dolls! Cheers! -Cody PS Apologies for the handheld-type shots and the blurry ones. I'll post better quality ones when I get some. Mahalo. "We have top men working on it right now!" "Who?" "Top. Men."

That is a fantastic looking hat, congratulations! John sure does know how to make them. I love the rabbit raiders that I received from him and wear it almost everyday. Wear the heck out of that thing, it only gets better. By the way, what kind of jacket is that in your last photo?

Thanks guys! Bdgsi11, that is a Todd's Costumes jacket that I distressed quite simply by using the concrete floor of my patio. It also got the shower treatment when I first got it and I let it dry with the sleeves pushed up. I've had it about a year or so and it's like an old friend now.

Thanks, Blooze! Will do! I'm forced to take it off to sleep and shower - otherwise it's on my head. Heh!

I never would have guessed. I have one of Todd's jackets too, but it doesn't look as good as yours.

Cheers, Lady Canyon! I'm madly in love with this hat already. The tack down on the ribbon is so cool, as well. No more fiddling with the ribbon to get it to cover up the stitching like all my other hats. Fantastic.
Bdgsi11, I think the shower treatment really brings life to the jacket. The drill I did was to put the jacket on a hanger, zip it up, then run it under warm-ish water in the shower until it was good and soaked. Then I put some towels on the couch, got meself a refreshing frosty Beverage, pushed the sleeves up my forearms and sat down to a few good movies while the jacket dried. INSTANT character to it after that. BEWARE though: The ONE dodgy thing about that treatment is that it will leave the liner slightly bigger than it really should be in the jacket. This doesn't bug me except for about a half centimeter of liner that tends to stick out of the right sleeve. I chalk that up to more Built In Character though. This shower treatment will leave the jacket a bit darker than it was before too. Glad you like it!

Wow the hat looks great! I love my rabbit Raiders I got from John too. It's incredible. And nice distressing on the jacket! I have Todd's standard as well.

Thanks, Noah! The beaver felt is so bloody tough I think I'll probably never get another rabbit felt fedora again. If I did, I'd definitely get a Penman though. It's really funny though - I wear a fedora every single day and my friends could basically give a damn about them. But THIS fedora...people love it. Having a handmade Penman is the difference between having a print of a painting and a REAL painting. I can't say enough good things about it. Seriously, guys...if you're thinking about getting an Indy fedora...SAVE your money and get yourself a Penman. This is craftsmanship at its finest!

Thank you, sir! I've been wearing it EVERY day and I love it more and more! Best fedora I've ever owned! Ordering a beaver Seaplane in the Fall. Another thing I can attest to now is the HUGE difference in quality and toughness between beaver and rabbit felt. I'll probably never get a rabbit hat again.

Patch, post loads of pics when you get it! If you've never had a beaver felt fedora before, prepare yourself for a revelation: the quality and sturdiness are absolutely amazing compared to rabbit. I got mine fairly soaked in the rain one day on the way to a coffee shop. Put it on the tables edge to dry and I swear when I looked back five minutes later the hat was dry! John does a brilliant job on these hats as you'll soon see! Cheers!

I called and spoke with John before completing the order form and he is a really cool guy. He explained the differences and let me come to the decision after telling me the pros of the rabbit and the beaver. It really made me feel good that he was patient and let me come to the decision with no pressure. Like he said, his profit is same on either hat. I know with customer service like that, his hat has to be awesome.
