Well, since the new J Crew Vintage boots are only "very, very slightly" modified versions of the Duxbury Ruggeds, I can tell you that they are very tough. I own two pair, and not only are they comfortable but also very well made. The leather feels like an oiled baseball glove and is very soft, but not thin. They don't have steel toes, but I don't believe Alden 405's do either, do they? And hey, they don't call them "Ruggeds" for nothing. I wish the Dubury version was still available for everyone as well, since it was the same boot as the new "Vintage", at 1/3 the price. It's a real shame to see both of these great Indy boots at a fair price, (Huskers and Ruggeds) slip away. Ken

Ken,
No sir, no steel toes on the Aldens.
Cheers, G-MANN

I am going to have to put the new J Crew boots off for a while. At least until they go on sale.

Part of the reason I missed out on getting these boots originally had to do with the fact that I found out about them after I had just bought the boots I'm using now. So I couldn't justify going out and spending another $50 on some boots when I had a brand new pair. So I put them off for later. So by the time I could justify getting another pair I didn't have the cash so I was screwed that way. Now I don't know what I'm going to do because I certainly can't afford Aldens.

That vendor had a few negative comments about their items but if they actually have the Carolina Husker in stock, there's your chance, guys. $24.99 ain't too shabby at all. I'm curious to see if that's the boot you get, Gonesolo. Congrats, btw.

What is the difference between D, EE , EEE in the boot sizes? It's just the width at the widest part of the foot in the front. Cheers, G-MANN

So is D the widest and then EE and EEE are thinner or do I have it backwards?

Thanks for the help guys. I pretty much think I'm a D by looking at the chart. The problem I'm having though is trying to figure out if a 12 would fit me or not. Depending on the shoe I kind of go between a 12 12 1/2 and a 13.

It might be different for some people, but I've always suggested to get the Carolinas in the size you normally wear for tennis shoes (tennis shoes that fit, that is). They don't seem to run big or small which is nice in taking the guess work out.

Well, I've got a pair of Skechers shoes that fit me perfect and they say they are a size 12. Now my other shoes have a little room but also fit fine and they are a size 13......so that's what is throwing me off at the moment. I don't know if the 12 in those particular boots would be to small or not.

Hmm. Tough call. I would only suggest getting them as close to your normal shoe size as possible since the steel toe might make them look a bit clowny if ordered too big.
::shrug:: I don't know.

I actually ordered those based off of a pair of skechers that I own. They have a steel toe and are the same size as the huskers. I'm guessing that all steel toed shoes fit about the same. Nice and clunky.

Thanks to Mola Ram.
It appears these can still be picked up now and again off of Ebay for less than what they originally sold for. For anyone who's won a pair off Ebay, please let us know if you indeed get the Husker model or if you're asked to choose another style or something.
Ebay's had them go unchallenged for $24.95 in some cases. <-----------
"....at that price, you can afford not to like them."

Yeah, and I almost went for the size 12D pair but I backed off for a few reasons. One was that I think I'm safer going with a size 13D. I'm think a 12D might be cutting it a little to close even though certain shoes I own are also 12's. Not sure if size differs by brand or not. I do know I've tried on two different brands of pants before in the exact same size and they fit different.
Comfort is also a factor and has to come above acccuracy. I don't care for steel toed shoes. I've owned a few in my life time and even with inserts and thick socks they killed my feet. So that's another reason I'm not going after these.
I was outside the other day wearing my current boots and I had to run after one of my kids and those boots about killed me. So I'm definitely going to have to find a lighter more comfortable boot of some kind and hope I can find one the resembles Indys in some way.

That's one of the things I've consistently said about these particular boots. Order your true shoe size and that they're not like other standard, steel-toed boots. They're very comfortable and it's hard to believe you have steel toed boots....until you kick something. Maybe Indakin will chime in with his experience. Going back to the J.Crew Vintage boots, that's what's got me holding off on ordering a pair. Some people say they're a size too big; others say they're just right when you order your actual shoe size. Don't people wear the right size shoe once they stop growing anymore? HOW DO THEY FIT, DAMN IT!? LOL! ;D ;D

Hey, at those bargain prices.... just order both sizes! Seriously, that is a great deal, and I would take your sizing advice Tone, if I was in the market for another pair of boots. I can tell you that I ordered both my J Crew boots 1/2 size larger, and they work really well for me. I also have a memory foam insert in them, which may play a part in that. Incidently, I only ordered them 1/2 size larger, because they were out of stock on my normal size. I just firgured that with boots, a little more room was better. I couldn't see ordering them any more than 1/2 size larger... but, I'm just one schmuck wit one set of experiences. Ken

;D ;D Of course the mispelling of "with" as "wit" was a typo, but it actually adds a touch of ignorant charm, don't you think? Ken

Yes, Tone. Very fitting. But how about shortening that to "I'm just a schmuck"?
P.S. - Look closely in your Carolina boots before you put them on again.
