I thought this might an interesting topic: How many pieces of Indy gear or very Indy-like / Very close gear have you seen in other movies? If you have screen caps or links to photos online, that's an added bonus. The point is to show the many ways Indy's gear has influenced other movies, or movies that inspired his in the first place. We can all agree that none of us are Indiana Jones, and very few even look similar. But, the gear/clothes he wore can be used in various looks and some can be quite in functional in our daily lives as well. I'll kick it off with two movies I saw Indy-Like shirts in recently: "Beetlejuice"Now, I know that he's wearing a typical safari shirt here. But, part of the fun is showing the ways other types of clothing / gear inspired Indy's look. "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"Again, I know these are WWII officer style shirts. But, it's really a part of the Indy gear heritage because it inspired the look. Of course he is also wearing officer style pants and the cotton web belt too. An added connection I'll throw in here, is that many of the early safari hunter types, were likely from England. So, both shirt styles would be similar for a reason. This can also involve hats, boots, jackets, you name it..... Hopefully this will be interesting! Ken

Indy's general look was so typical of the 1930's that you can find "Indy-ish" elements movies from the era. Especially the fedora and leather jacket. Its quite interesting how a look once so common is now totally associated with Indy.

You definitely see that look in a lot of old movies. Many men dressed that way well into the 50's. My grandfather was a truck driver during and after WWII. In every picture I've seen of him in his truck driving days, he was wearing khaki pants, a brown leather jacket and a brown fedora and so did a lot of the other truckers of that era. This was long before the 70's era trucker which most people think of today. Keep in mind that truckers had to stand the elements just like early pilots. My grandfather started commerical trucking in 1945 and didn't get an enclosed truck until 1952!. That means he drove long distances, all year round with no side windows, only button down flaps. (Forget about A/C, heat, power steering or brakes too.) Just this weekend I watched a film called They Drive By Night with Bogart and George Raft. They played Depression era truck drivers and wore the classic costume. Almost everybody wore fedoras back then but I think the short jacket was seen as functional for many professions like driving and flying.

I wish I had them on hand to post. My uncle has all the old trucking pictures that I was refering to. I can tell you that my grandfather wore a C-crown fedora with a 2 3/4" bound brim. It had a 1/2" brown ribbon. His pants were Dickies. His jacket was a civilian version of an A2. It had snap down epaulets, bigger cargo pockets, and handwarmer pockets. It also had a bi-swing back. Schott Bros. makes a similar jacket now. www.schottnyc.com/leather-jackets/a-2-naked-cowhide-leather-flight-jacket.htmHis jacket was either cow or horsehide. He always called it his Spiewak. I always thought that was somethine he just made up but I now know Speiwak and Sons were (and still are) jacket makers from New York. My grandfather's been gone 19 years now. I have his hat but no one knows where the jacket ended up. He wore it from the 50's into the 80's. I remember he thought I was nuts when I asked him for his old hat and started wearing it all the time.

Don't ever pass up a chance to see Charlton Heston in Secret of the Incas or Alan Ladd in China. They wear nearly identical outfits to Indy. (Ladd's character is even named Jones.) Sorry no screen caps of those. As far as I can tell, these films aren't on DVD. Sometimes they turn up on AMC and Turner classics. Both are a must for any Indy fan. Of course, a personal favorite of mine is Jake Cutter from Tales of the Gold Monkey. On the show, Stephen Collins wore Indy type shirts (and sometimes baseball shirts), officer dress pants and his rarely taken off A-2. He even carried a Webley 8 years before LC.

Great examples so far! Here's another from a movie we watched last night. It's "A Guy Thing", starring Jason Lee ("My Name Is Earl"), Julia Stiles, and Selma Blair. In this scene, Julia's character finds some snapshots of Jason's character, from childhood. He just happens to be dressed up as a certain "obtainer of rare antiquities", we all might know.... Ken

These are really great shots. It's nice to see some of the older stuff that inspired the Indiana Jones character.
I almost thought for a second Gary Cooper put his pants backwards and that those were just really big back pockets! ;D

Here’s Bogart in Tokyo Joe (1949). He’s looking very Indy in a nicely weathered A-2 with a sewn on pile collar.

Check out the texture of the leather in this photo.... it looks like they used the same distressing process in Raiders. It must be lamb too, because the drape and thickness look the same too. More great photos from everybody! Ken

I always forget Tokyo Joe but Bogy looks very cool in this film (even if the story is a Casblanca behind the bamboo curtain with about 1/8th of its heart)
