Hey, Here are a bunch of pictures of my Gibson & Barnes Flightsuits EXPEDITION Jacket. It is the Dark Brown Chrome dyed Lambskin size 44 Regular off the rack with no mods. Very nice scalloped pocket flaps. The action pleat is 1-1/2" deep. If you have any questions please feel free to ask away. Cheers, John

That is a nice looking jacket. I wasn't aware that they did mods on the G&B coats I always thought it was just a choice of sizes.

Harry, I am going to give them a call in the morning and discuss with them what they are willing to modify on the Expedition. I have another one on order so they may be willing to pass info on to me. Cheers, John

I don't understand why they would keep axeing them? This IS an Indy jacket isn't it? It shouldn't matter that it's not a Wested.

Well, I think this thing about the mods axing G&B threads is kind of a running joke now. The reason that they get axed is that someone usually turns it into a my "Wested is better than your G&B" type of deal.

Oh, I see.....Well, I guess that makes some sense but still. You could do that with any piece of gear. "My whip is a Morgan so it's better than your Midwest Whips one" as an example.
I was thinking that maybe the reason was everyone over there has a fondness for the Wested Jackets and Peter and don't like anyone coming in and challanging that.

I was thinking that maybe the reason was everyone over there has a fondness for the Wested Jackets and Peter and don't like anyone coming in and challanging that. I didn't see what happend on that particular thread but there is sometimes partisan slanging between fans of both camps so when that happens the thread gets stamped on. I don't think it a matter of Peter not liking being "challenged", it's his design, from Noodlemans suggestions. He doesn't like it being copied, and the G&B IS a copy of a stunt jacket. The pocket's and flaps are more screen accurate than the current "LC wested pockets" and the pleats are shallower. But you get the same "zipper being a long way from the bottom of the jacket" issue and the collar looks a little off. John has both and evidently prefers the G&B, is it the fit and finish? All things being equal it is $120-$150 more expensive than a Wested so I'd expect a seriously sturdier jacket for my money.

Yes I do own both brands Wested and G&B as well as a U.S. Wings. I believe that the Wested is a Wonderful Jacket too and Peter must have a heart of GOLD to make the Jackets he does for the price he charges. Not to mention the headaches he has had to endure lately due to the ULTIMATE SCREEN ACCURATE WESTED thread. I have ordered all my jackets in off the rack sizes and not with the Mods. At the time I did not know that Wested would provide all the different changes to their jackets. I myself would never ask Peter for all those mods, you might as well ask for the Jacket to be made from scratch in some cases. I spoke with Amy this morning at G& B the only Mod that is allowed is sleeve length. They will use the sleeves from a Long on a Regular. HOWEVER this makes it a NON-RETURNABLE custom jacket. SORRY MARC, No Horsehide. I am NOT saying that the G&B is Superior to ANY other brand this is only my preference. All that being said, here is why I prefer my G&B a bit more. The color, which indoors looks almost black (close to Wested's Dark Brown). The fit was better for an off the rack size. The pleat depth was more screen accurate and has the hidden elastic to keep them closed . The scalloping of the pocket flaps. The smaller yoke. The actual feel and durability of the Lambskin G&B uses. Chrome not vegatable dyed. The hide is dyed all the way through. If the jacket is worn or scratched the color underneath is close to the surface color and appears as suede. I have copied this explanation from COW posted by AH.CHROME DYED LEATHER...................... Means the jacket is meant to wear indestructibly for a Loooooooong time. Part of the tanning process of the hide itself. TANNING The raw collagen fibers of the hides must be converted into a stable product which is no longer susceptible to rotting. This is done by adding chrome tanning agents to the hides in a revolving drum. These tanning agents also significantly improve the hide's dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, resistance to chemicals and to heat, the ability to flex innumerable times without breaking, and the ability to endure repeated cycles of wetting and drying. I hope this helps you understand why I am a fan of the Expedtion. Cheers, John P.S. I will start a similar thread about my Goatskin Wested, unless one you kind folks would like to do that

Nice jacket John.
If I wasn't living in Europe I would probably order a G&B instead of a Wested. I can't put my finger on it, but there is something a bit more appeling about the overall look of the G&B expedition jackets - at least when seen on my monitor.

Well, I didn't mean Peter persay wouldn't want the challenge it was more along the lines of the "Westies" not wanting any other brand cutting in on their turf.
I just think they need to be a little bit more open to new stuff over there than they have recently. I just feel if you present certain items over there now it's never good enough because they aren't what the majority owns.
I looked at the G&B before I decided on going with the Wested because I thought it would be easier for me to just get something off the rack. I didn't want to hassle with trying to get accurate measurements and that. I wear a large off the rack and that would have been fine for me but what stopped me from buying one was the price. It was just a little bit to steep for me at the time. I was also influenced by the fact that Peter made the jackets for the film so owning a Wested would be like owning a jacket from the movie.
I love my Wested and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I also think G-Mann's jacket is just as nice and I'd love to own one of those too someday.

I see what you mean G-Mann. The Wested and the G & B are 2 different animals. And you should be aware of each ones strengths and weaknesses when buying and this thread illustrates that. It also depends what you want out of the jacket. What would change on a standard Wested is the pockets, the current default LC are too big. Luckily for me mine were smaller. The pleats dont bother me too much but I might get them made smaller next tme just for a laugh. The custom sizing is a big issue for me too as I'm kind of a custom shape But I've been lucky managing to buy 2 off the rack 38/small jackets from Wested just like that. Normally even the small sizes in shops are too big for me and I need a XS. The veg dyed leather is a plus for me rather than a negative I really like how it's starting to wear in and take on a character on it's own which is why I'm wary of the other tougher leathers. I'd like to see a G&B in the flesh one day, as I'm sure it's a very fine jacket.

When it comes to the pockets, I prefer the look of the smaller Raider Jacket ones. However for use, I prefer to have the larger so I can put my big Monkey paws in the warmers. Since 1/2 of the year in Chicago is cold. This goes for both my Wested and G&B. In my case screen accuracy loses out to use.

I just got back from the cruise, but I wanted to say.... great pics of the Expedition John! I have two Wested's myself (one of them used to be John's ), but I know that both companies make wonderful jackets. I see it like the hat situation... there is nothing wrong with having multiple brands of either jacket or hat, or even just plain multiple ones for different purposes. One for dress, one for distress, one with room to layer underneath, one for a more screen accurate fit, etc.... I'm also glad that we can discuss all these options here, without fear of a war or deletion taking place. They are all just choices, and how can having more information about something be a bad thing? Nice post! Ken
