I just finished reading the novelization of KOTCS and really enjoyed it. I went to the book store and noticed several I.J novels. Which one do you folks consider the best of the I.J. novels?

This is a tough one...I don't think I've got a definite favorite, though most folks would probably agree that the Max McCoy novels are the best of the bunch as they are chronologically closer to the original films and tend to have a similar "feel". I started reading the Rob MacGregor novels myself (I began with Dance of the Giants) and I liked some of his earlier novels as well, though some of the later MacGregor novels didn't do much for me. I've never bothered to read any of the Martin Caidin novels, though I have heard they aren't that great. If you get a chance, I'd buy them all and read them in order. They follow a common chronology, beginning in the mid 20's and ending in the mid 1930's. Each author has his own writing style and way of fleshing out the Indy character, and in some cases, events and characters from earlier novels may be referrenced (or make an appearance) in later novels. MacGregor and McCoy both have recurring characters and storylines in their individual series of books.

I agree with Griff about my favorite writer in the series, and that MacGregor's earliest books seemed more in tune than the last. If you're in it for the long haul, the way to go is to start with the MacGregor books and read them in order... leading up to the McCoy books. The last of the McCoy books leads you right into Temple of Doom. If you just want to read a few, I would start with the Max McCoy books. Here's the list in timeline order: Rob MacGregor NovelsIndiana Jones and the Peril at Delphi Indiana Jones and the Dance of the Giants Indiana Jones and the Seven Veils Indiana Jones and the Genesis Deluge Indiana Jones and the Unicorns Legacy Indiana Jones and the Interior World Martin Caidin NovelsIndiana Jones and the Sky Pirates Indiana Jones and the White Witch Max McCoy NovelsIndiana Jones and the Philosopher's Stone Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Sphinx There are also 8 novels written by Wolfgang Hohlbein, that were only released in German. I have no idea as to where they would fit in the overall Indy timeline, or how good they are. I would love to see them released in English, so I could enjoy them as well! ;D Here they are, just in case you can read German.... or were simply curious: Indiana Jones and the Feathered Snake Indiana Jones and the Ship of the Gods Indiana Jones and the Gold of El Dorado Indiana Jones and Genghis Khan's Sword Indiana Jones and the Lost People Indiana Jones and the Secret of Easter Island Indiana Jones and the Legacy of Avalon Indiana Jones and the Labyrinth of Horus As far as the movie novelizations go, I recommend the Temple Of Doom version by James Kahn, the Campbell Black version of Raiders, and the Rob MacGregor version of Last Crusade (same original novel author from above). Finally, I'm going to plug my favorite non movie Indy story once more. It's called "Indiana Jones and The City Of Legends", and was/is being written by Griff (GCR), right here at Indy Lounge: indylounge.proboards105.com/index.cgi?board=toa&action=display&thread=2361&page=1I put this one right up there with Raiders, Temple Of Doom, and Last Crusade, as it really captures the feel and tone of Indiana Jones to me. Happy reading, Ken

You're all going to laugh at me and possibley toss spoiled pumpkin inards at me, but my favorite book is "Sky Pirates." The story was horrible and the action was weak and boring. But almost half the novel takes place in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio, home of the Wright brothers so it has a special place in my heart. Even though Indy only visited ficticious places. However, I'm pretty sure that the restaurant he took the girl too was based on a popular Italian place that has closed down in the last two years (but there are plans to reopen). So if you're heading into Dayton and want to hang out at some of the sites Indy might have visited, let me know and I'll be happy to give you a virtual tour and give you some highlights. ;D

A fellow Ohioan; I'm from Cleveland!
But anyway, I'd say Secret of the Sphinx was the best of the series. I tried to read Peril at Delphi, but found it too boring.

I've just added Indiana Jones and the army of the dead to my ever growing I-J book collection...But I plan to save it and only read it on my next vacation (mostly during transit and on the planes)

I've got that one too and just started to read it. I also got Pyramid of the sorcerer (which is a short story book also)... Mount Sinai's story starts right where Pyramid finished...at the pyramid of the Uxmal Mayan site

I'll probably read Pyramid of the Sorcerer next then. Is Army of the Dead a short story or a longer novel?

Trust me I.J and the armt of the dead is long....long...long...very, very long. I've read the whole book in under 5 hrs ( a record for me) but I kept skipping pages, got to the end and it didn't show. I may not be the reference since the only single book I liked besides the movie adaptations was Secret of the sphinx ( which I thought was O.k, no more). I don't even know why I keep buying them actually...

So far I have read Dance of the Giants, The Seven Veils, Genesis Deluge, Sky Pirates, White Witch, Dinosaur Eggs, Hollow Earth, and Army of the Dead. Also Pyramid of the Sorcerer and Mystery of Mount Sinai. I enjoyed reading all of them. I will get the rest of the books when the bookstore gets them

Sorry to revive a zombie thread, but I recently started reading Sky Pirates. I was so hopeful... but I'm struggling so hard to even keep reading it. Indy seems so out of character in it, and the continued need the author has to skip things and tell me exactly how much time has past (20 minutes later, an hour later, etc) has me pulling my hair out It reads like fanfiction, worse than Twilight to me lol I also have a few others I bought , including Army of the Dead who is an author I am familiar with. I wanna stop reading this one and move on but I feel dedicated. Like i'd waste the 2 hours of my life already into it if I dont just finish it. Speaking of fanfiction though, there is a novelization of the Atlantis game on line I stumbled across recently, probably old news and all but its REALLY REALLY good to me. Wish it was published. Its a million times better than Sky Pirates lol

I had a hard time reading Sky Pirates too. It seems so long. It can get a little confusing. I finished reading it but it was a hard one. Probably the hardest one I've read.

I certainly will! Thanks!
Off topic, Ken, sorry but I notice you are in North Florida! I am originally from Tallahassee myself, been gone from there about 3 years now. Kinda miss it a little. Moved to Sarasota for a job then they moved me to Nashville, TN late last year. What part of North Florida are you in?
