After many months of waiting, I am finally going to receive my Indy whip from Jim. The wait has been prolonged by some personal problems he has been having. Either way, he sent me these preview pics and told me that I would have it a few days after the new year. What do you guys think?

I'm still waiting too, doesn't bother me too much I'm not in any great hurry, haven't paid anything yet and the exchange rate has been moving in my favour.

Thanks for posting those pics - it's always interesting to see how other whipmakers work. That first picture in particular says a lot about his construction methods - very interesting that he uses a clamp instead of a hook. I hope you'll receive it soon and post lots of pics of the finished whip.

**Sorry about the quality of the pictures. I'll get some better ones soon** Well, after another month of wait, it finally arrived and I started cracking with it. I was actually able to pull off a few overhand cracks when the fall broke off. I found it though and now I have to figure out how to re-attach it. Fun. Anyway I think it is pretty nice for a budget whip. One question though. See how the whip (in the first pic) doesn't coil perfectly? Is that natural for a new whip? Will it break in after a few more uses? For some reason it waves instead of being a perfect circle. Either way, thanks for your time.

Great color on this whip! Pagey will definitely be a great guy to answer the coiling shape question, and possibly offer tips on the best way to re-attach the fall. Congrats on a good looking weapon/tool/cool piece of gear! Ken

Thanks guys. Yea, Jim had a sale over at COW and it basically cost me the same as a Winrich budget whip. By the way, this is cowhide. I was expecting the color to be darker based on the descriptions that Jim gave me, but I really like the way it turned out.

I think the color is great now, but it will darken up in time. So, if you wanted it a little darker, it will get that way on it's own.

Jim makes a good whip. I repaired one of his, and also got to try one out at the finger lakes summit.
The bend in the plaiting that prevents the whip from coiling perfectly is probably a change in core/belly material of the whip. The density of the core changing combined with the plaiting can make it appear that way. It could also, (more likely) be where a strand was dropped. After a while, it will loosen up, and fall straighter. This is really common with cowhide whips, because one small difference in core or belly width can exaggerate the small change.
How did the fall break off? If it snapped at the base, then the fall was no good, and if the hitch snapped, thats very bad also. Either way contact Jim. Sounds like the hide he cut the fall from was a dud. Adam

Good info from molorom there. I might add that a new whip often looks like that as some areas of the braiding might be tighter than others. Only marginally so, often due to strand drops - and as molorom pointed out, this tends to even out as the whip is used. If you're concerned - just look at the pics of brand new Morgans that Bernardo put up after his visit to David Morgan.
Morgan's website has pretty good instructions on fall replacement.

Ahh!! Now that makes a whole lot more sense! ;D To be honest I was a little worried before - the fall flying off a brand new whip!! Tying on a cracker is very simple- again check DM's site. Once you've tied it as tight as possible, give the whip a few gentle cracks to really secure it before doing any loud cracking.
