Hello all! I recognize this crowd from somewhere... Anyway, after watching several videos of other members cracking their whips like pros (specially Blues) I brought my mexican 12 footer out (waiting for celeste to get back to order one of his whips) to practice. Lets just say I could use a lesson or two. My question is this: Where did you all start off? What was your first step and what did you do to practice?
Thanks!

By the way Welcome to the Lounge. I owned a couple of really cheap whips as a kid when Indy first came out and got pretty good with it. Then I didn't mess with any for years. Last year I ended up getting a good Indy whip from WSP and started learning all over again. I've just watched the other videos of people cracking theirs and looked up a couple of things on the web and have been kind of "winging it" from there. I need more practice but I have gotten more comfortable with it and I'm starting to re-learn what I could do as a kid. Just start with the basics and get used to how your whip moves and handles. Once you get used to that then you can start trying different things. Here's a website that has helped me. www.bullwhip.org/

gonesolo,
Welcome to the Lounge.
All I ever did was try to mimic what I had seen in the movies. I could still use a heck of a lot more practice though. I started in 1982 with LONG LONG periods of time without practice.
Cheers, G-MANN

Bear in mind that 12 ft is a very long whip to learn with. Things like the circus crack ( think of Indy and the swordsmen) are very difficult and very slow with such a length. Forward crack and sidearm crack should be easy enough to achieve though. What length are you thinking of ordering from Giovanni?

Some people helped me learn a basic crack at the first QM Summit I went to, but after that, I bought "The New Bullwhip Book", and it took off from there.

Thanks for the advice guys. Pitfall, I remember visiting that site when I first got my whip and its very insightful. I also went to www.bullwhip-info.com/ which has some good videos and info. Learning with the 12 footer is no joke, on top of the fact that I do not have enough room. I was thinking about getting an 8 foot whip(heard that the length was just right). Anyone have any experience with a Gio whip? I think I'll research the book, Cactus. Thanks again and keep it coming guys.

I'm not sure if you meant me or Indy Blues... but, if you were referring to me... thank you very much! I can only speak for my own way of learning, and that is simply watching Indy. Seriously, I watched the whip scenes multiple times to see how he was moving his arms, wrist, etc..... then went outside and tried to do it that way. I also bought "The New Bullwhip Book", but haven't put any of it to use in my whipping style yet. My whip is a 10 ft. IOAB, and though I have heard that an 8 ft. is much easier, I like the added length of mine. It can't be too hard or I wouldn't be able to do it, after all! I personally like to use mine in an aggresive, attack style... as Indy did in the movies. I have zero interest in learning any fancy tricks or other styles that wouldn't be used in a fight, wrapping a villain, swinging (yeah right), or other Indy usage. I do have several combos and a few moves I haven't used on video yet, but am saving them and new action videos for the cooler weather of fall. I think each person learns things there own way, but the book could be of help to many. I just prefer to watch someone do it on video or film myself. Thanks again and let us see your whipping in action, Ken

Yes sir, it was you. I keep forgetting that there are two 'blues' on here.
I guess the first step would be to actually get the whip. This might help. It is going to be a nice and easy 8 footer so I can learn. That and practice, practice, practice!

Well thank you much again! Yeah, having a whip will definitely help won't it? We look forward to checking it out, Ken
