I also own 2 whips from Bernardo made from kip. I agree with Pagey that I think the plaiting became loose because of the kiphide, and not because of anything Bernardo did wrong. But since he's switching over to roohide, I'm going to have him make me another whip -- so then I'll be able to see for sure. I also currently own 2 Strain whips -- they are definitely very nice, and crack with ease...but Bernardo is closer to screen accuracy if that's what you're looking for. But you really can't go wrong with either maker in my opinion...

Forgive my ignorance here. I was assuming that Adams IOABs were also made of kip, and no one reports any looseness problems with his whips? Or is kip a particularly soft calfskin?

Kip is a little different to cowhide - and there are different types of cowhide. I think Adam uses chrome tanned rather than vegetable tanned cowhide. I don't know enough about the different tanning processes to really comment though.
