Harrison Ford: Shia Won't Take My Indiana Jones Rolemovies.hollyscoop.com/indiana-jones/harrison-ford-shia-wont-take-my-indiana-jones-role_1053.aspxWord on the street is that if there is indeed going to be another Indiana Jones movie, Shia LaBeouf will be taking over the lead role from Harrison Ford.
But Harrison is denying the fact that he's losing the role he made famous in the first place.
He tells Moviefone, No, that's never been the idea. As George has famously said, "we'd have to call it 'Mutt Jones: The Search for Elvis.' I think it just doesn't work that way. And there's definitely a distinction between passing the fedora and someone picking it up."
George Lucas also commented on Shia's role in the possible upcoming Indy movie. He says, "I have an idea to make Shia the lead character next time and have Harrison come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. The franchise really depends on me coming up with a good idea. And that series is very research intensive. So we're doing research now to see if we can't come up with another object for him to chase... hopefully we'll come up with something."
But one things sure, said Lucas, "Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones."Ken

I'm confused...this article almost makes it sound like they are trying to reassure people that Shia will not suddenly be cast as the actual character of Indiana Jones, yet it still makes mention of Shia in a lead-role with Ford tagging along Connery style. So WTF? Will Shia be the lead but Ford will still play Indy and the movie will still be called "Indiana Jones and the next bad idea" or whatever? Will they share equal screen-time? Does Mutt even have to be involved beyond a cameo? I'm dreading whatever comes from this entire thing, I really am.

If you've got a good story with good characters, the object doesn't really matter that much. There have been many great MacGuffin movies without "deep" MacGuffins. One great example, the greatest of all, is The Maltese Falcon. The story has very little to do with what the falcon really is and is more about the chase and what people will do to get it and keep it. In one of my favorite MacGuffin flicks, Ronin, the viewer never even finds out what is in the suitcase that everyone is so desperate to obtain. My point is there are plenty of archaelological treasures to chase and plenty of mythical objects to pursue. Choosing which one isn't as important as creating a great story and great characters around it. Character and story development should be the focus instead of "research." What research did they do for KOTCS? Watch a few UFO conspiracy shows on A&E?

I agree with part of what your are saying about the Mcguffin, but those movies you mentioned were not about an archaeologist. I think the story is the most important element, but in this genre the Mcguffin is intrical to a successful story. Nobody is going care about Indiana Jones and the Search for His Missing Sock. Look at the worst IJ films, TOD & KOTCS. Granted they both bad scripts(TOD was actually okay), but they also had lousy McGuffins. Wouldn't you rather see a great script with an artifact you are familiar with rather than one that was completely fabricated?
