I have an SKS.... I'm sure this surprises no one. Mine is a cheap Chinese Norinco rifle that I modified with a dragunov stock and a 30 round banana clip. I have had ZERO problems with it. However, I have read that the Russian and Albanian are the best ones. It's pretty hard to buy a bad SKS. It's such a simple gun, you can field strip it and put it back together in minutes. The chinese SKS's have ugly stamped metal parts, but if you are just looking for a plinker, you really can't go wrong especially for the price. Plus.... mine is a friggin' tack driver. I absolutely love it. I always hit whatever I point it at.

I have had the Chinese version since the mid-90's. I never modified it and it is quite durable and accurate as-is. I was gonna put a knock-off Dragonov stock on it, but i fell out with gun collecting years ago and didnt want to spend the money to modify it. i always liked the Russian and Yugo versions with the Knife bayonets better than the Chinese spike bayonet though. I thought that only 4 versions had been made...Russian, Yugo, Chinese and one other that I forget, but then again, I've been out of the gun scene for a bit.

Hungarian, Romanian, Russian in that order if you can find them. Good luck with that.

Here are a couple of links that should help you out. To summarize though, you will pay a bit of a premium for a Russian SKS over the other countries of origin. There is no reason to pay extra for a Russian SKS unless you collect them. www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/sksshootout/index.aspwww.simonov.net/ubervalues.htmIf you are able to spend a bit more money you should think about an AK47/AKM type rifle. The price for a decent AK will run a few bucks over a Russian SKS. You can find them all day long in the $300-400 range, if you look carefully you can find them under $300, and you will have a rifle that is 100% reliable, incredibly simple to operate, uses 30 round mags, and because it has been in constant use by half the world for over 60 years, has parts availability better than any other rifle. Not only that, but they are incredibly easy to sell if you need to convert the rifle back to cash quickly. Edited for clarity.

I have a non-import marked Chinese non-Norinco SKS that was made on Russian Tooling. Is very accurate and 100% reliable. Nothing was modified as its perfectly handy as-is. I also have a Unissued Yugo that I stained the stock. Chinese: Yugo:
