IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that The Day the Earth Stood Still, directed by Scott Dickerson and starring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, John Cleese and Jaden Smith, will be simultaneously released to both IMAX® and conventional theatres on December 12, 2008. The film, which is a remake of the 1951 classic sci-fi film about an alien visitor and his giant robot counterpart who visit Earth, will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology.

"The suspense, action and sheer intensity of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' is ideally suited to IMAX's immersive format," said Bruce Snyder, President, Domestic Distribution, Twentieth Century Fox. "We're very excited to once again expand our relationship with IMAX to offer moviegoers a chance to experience another one of our tent-pole movies in a truly unique and premium way."

"Completing our 2008 slate with this action title is a great way to enter the holiday season and kick off 2009," said IMAX Co-CEO's Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "With the ongoing rollout of IMAX digital theatres, we expect that on December 12th the size of our network will be considerably larger than it is today, which is good for IMAX, exhibitors in the IMAX business, our partners at Fox and, of course, moviegoers."

That sounds interesting. The only problem with IMAX is that if the run time is too long, you get an abbreviated version on-screen. The platters that hold the built-up reels of film have a limit. I believe the new Star Wars films were cut buy 20 or 30 minutes. Years ago I was going to work for an IMAX Post Production facility and the set-up is like something out of 2001 A Space Odyssey. I also remember the platter of film was too big to carry upstairs, so they placed it on the first floor and then looped it up to the projector on the second floor.

Not sure that's true any more, I saw TDK in IMAX and it seemed to be the full version (152mins)

You're right about that really not being the case anymore with 99.9% of films released today. I believe IMAX changed the platter size over the years to accomodate a run time of 2:38. I think they say it's 150 min., but you can have a little platter overlap for an extra 8 min. of trailers. I highly doubt "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will run over that. I just play it safe and see everything projected on 35mm first. Plus I'm not crazy about film grain the size of tennis balls.

I like your Outer Limits "Demon With A Glass Hand"
Avatar. Cameron got sued by Harlan Ellison for stealing part of that story {as well as the other O.L. episode "Soldier" also written by Ellison} for the Terminator movie.

Now H.E. is given mention in the credits in Terminator.

Thanks John. That is my all-time favorite Outer Limits episode. I remember hearing about Cameron getting sued. I also seem to remember hearing that they originally wanted to make a TV series out of the story. It seems like you could still do it today. Put it it on the Sci-Fi channel and I'm positive you would get a following. They would still have to use the Bradbury Building as far as I'm concerned. I love that place. Come to think of it, I'm going to go there tomorrow and take pictures.

A new 5 minute trailer for 20th Century Fox's The Day the Earth Stood Still is now online and can be watched using the player below! You may have seen a lot of this video on TV in September, but this new version of the clip features more footage previously unseen.

Opening on December 12 in conventional theaters and IMAX, the sci-fi thriller stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith, Jon Hamm and Kyle Chandler. Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission – and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."
