I think by Lucas saying that Spielberg wants to drag it back to the way they were, means more of the look and feel of the first three movies, rather than literally going back in time.

Raiders should be the benchmark for any Indy movies. The powers that be should put themselves in the mindset of Raiders and see everything through the tone and feeling of that movie. If a joke seems too silly and out of context with the tone set in Raiders, throw it out. You might miss out on some cheesey, easy laugh gags but the film would be better for it. If a stunt seems too far fetched, too cartoony and like somthing that wouldn't fit in Raiders, leave it out. If the action seems too soft and wimpy and not up to Raiders standards, fix it. Ect, ect, blah, blah blah. They had the golden opportunity to do all of these things and didn't.

I agree with the theory that Spielberg wants to gor for a more traditional "look", rather that a chronological step back in the history of the Indy universe. He prefers making films the old fashioned way, whereas Lucas is basically like the geek who slobbers over every new "gee whiz" gadget at Radio Shack. (although I can get that way sometimes too)
Spielberg and Ford were happy enough with the final product, but Lucas gets dazzled by what ILM can do in movies like "The Mummy", and he wants to show off. He calls the Indy series a tribute to the 30's Republic Serials, and '50s B movies, with their wobbly set walls, and bombastic music., Yet he wants to tweak new movies to such a state of sterility, that the CGI becomes a distraction, even though it wasn't as heavy handed as the SW Prequels.
It's a matter of film making philisophical differences between the two, and ultimately I think they will work out whatever "issues" they have, and make another one.

I can't let Spielberg off the hook at all regarding the look of KOTCS. Lucas may have hatched the story, but Spielberg was completely in charge of the look and direction of the movie. I would have been happy to let Lucas show off some top shelf CG work, rather than the crap they served us with Indy 4.
Mind you, I would have preferred the entire thing to have the look and feel of the first three movies, but if I had to choose between the CG work his company may have done on The Mummy 3 and the fake work they did for KOTCS, I would gladly have chosen what I've seen so far in The Mummy 3.
Maybe Spielberg has taken a look back and regrets what they did with Indy 4. Maybe he's just heard and read the thousands of negative comments about the movie and is starting to see the light. Either way, if it helps him get his way for Indy 5, and we all get a movie that looks and feels like part of the original series..... we all win.

I have half a mind to send a copy of what you wrote once a week, until their lawyers contact me.

Yeah, it's the sci-fi look combined with all the CG work that he must really regret the most. Of course, the overall direction and editing left the movie with no flow to it, which was his fault. There was no character development, no build to the story, and no Indy feel, IMO. I dont trust that he fully gets how completely different this movie was from the other three, but we'll see.
Let's hope he learned his lesson and can convince Lucas to write a story that also has more of the original feel to it as well.

Maybe bring back Lawrence Kasdan? What would be wrong with that?
It seems to me that Spielberg had nothing but good things to say about Larry. Going back to your roots should be easy when most of the people that planted the roots are still alive.

I'm simple as this: doesn't matter what decision they will take, I'm with them. If they will come with Indy 5, great, if they don't great.

Mutt Williams and the (Insert MacGuffin name here). No thanks. Lucas sometimes gets it right but moreoften gets it wrong (IJ and the Monkey King?) but plows ahead because he is Lucas. The Jones franchise should be nailed in it's coffin before it becomes embarrassing. Sad but true.

The most important thing to concentrate on first, before how the movie is shot, is the STORY! Once they have a solid story together, then they can bicker and fight all they want. I mean the story of how they come up with "Raiders" is very cool...two friends relaxing in Hawaii, on the beach, tossing around fun ideas for movies. I think maybe THAT is what Steven was talking about...though I'm almost certain he was referring to how it was filmed and produced as opposed to how it was thought up.
