EDIT: Oops, wrong section! Move to the super heroes section, please. One of my favorite graphic novels is finally made into a movie! Looks very promising, looks like they are really keeping it to the novel (I wonder if they'll stick to the original ending though). This is the trailer that they put up together with The Dark Knight in theatres. Plot:"Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity... but who is watching the Watchmen?"

I've read about Watchmen, but I've never read it. After seeing the trailer and a local police officer telling how awesome it is, I had to order it. Amazon.com has it for like $11.

Looks interesting.
I am not familiar with the graphic novel or the characters... but I couldn't help noticing the "Batman-look-a-like" in the images.

I got the graphic novel from the library when I was in high school but a lot of it was over my head...and I think I was pretty smart back then.
I'm looking forward to this movie. I hope its better than 300.

I saw Watchmen, I enjoyed it. I did read the comics and I feel that reading them made the movie a better experience. It is not your ordinary super hero action film. It's the thinking man's comic book!

In reality, this film was better than "The Dark Knight."
"Watchmen" had a message that is still as relevant today as it was twenty-some years ago. The overall message of "The Dark Knight" was that sometimes, the best way to combat chaos and anarchy is with faith in humanity, the belief that humans are inherently good. Oddly enough, that is the message of most superhero films. Go figure. But the message of "Watchmen" is that humanity, left to its own devices, would cease to be UNLESS someone/something intervenes and forces them back on the straight and narrow. That is a completely new concept in the superhero film. It takes humanity's fate out of the humans' hands and gives it to the superhumans (i.e. God).

I dont know if i agree with the God analogy, but i do agree that people need to be supervised or scared into the straight and narrow sometimes....most of the time.

I'm going to see it today, thought I was gonna see it last week but other stuff came up. I know the ending is different (among other parts) so I'll see how it translates to film; I have read the novel. I have heard rumors of a Director's Cut DVD being about 4 hours or more since the 2 hr 43 min. running time isn't enough to cover everything. That would be great to see.

To paraphrase a certain Animal House member: "My advice is to drink heavily"....before you sit down to this film. Also, make sure that you use the restroom facilities first , as this...gem of a film...is a whopping 160 minutes long (and ya feel every minute of it). I'm a huge comic fan from way back (including some of Moore's stuff) and I really disliked this movie. I think that I liked League of Extraordinary Gentlemen better than this...not that That's saying much. Sorry about the negativity, guys, but this film really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I enjoyed it. I think the graphic novel was a lot better, though. I look forward to the DVD. They left quite a bit out. I almost like the movie's ending better than the book's ending. It worked better for a film, at least. I would recommend it.

I liked it. The rumored Director's Cut will be about 4 hours long. I guess since all books who turn into movies are never the same, why would Watchmen be different? I had heard that the comic ending wouldn't have a good ending if done in film. I guess you have to appreciate it for what it is.

Well I finally got round to seeing it tonight.
Back in the 80's I was really big into collecting comics, I read a lot of the translated Manga and all of the Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Killing Joke type stuff... Watchmen was one that I would keep getting told was great but never remembered ever finishing.
Now to the film, I enjoyed it, we've never really had superhero film done like this. Strong, bloody violence et all. Good effects and an interesting story line. Yup, you can point to The Dark Knight and that is far superior, but it is still hampered by the need to be PG13. Watchmen is a solid 18 in the UK and I expect a R in the US. And it's action profits from that.
Is it a great film, no, but thought provoking, well made and I never once felt it was overlong. We should have seen a lot more of Silk Spectre I in action, Carla Gugino.... wowwee. Rorshach was fantastic, I never expected him to be so short but he OWNED the part. Night Owl was really obviously a Batman/Bruce Wayne nod, and Silk Spectre II, I could watch her all night.
The film *has* been overhyped, in a year or 2 we will see it as that. But it is an interesting event movie and does deserve a watch. (No pun intended).
After watching the film... I'm pretty sure I never finished the graphic novel.
Now if some one could cut to it and make The Dark Knight Returns.... Supes and Bats slugging it out.... yes please!
