Spider-Man 4 Script Due this Summer www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=54105Sam Raimi told SCI FI Wire that David Lindsay-Abaire's script for Spider-Man 4 should be ready by summer.
Raimi said the film has to make the announced May 6, 2011 release date. "We have to make the release date, and on all of these pictures, the 'Spider-Man' films--and I'm sure it's the same as with many of the other bigger-budgeted films--they have release dates far in advance of a screenplay," he said. "So it's about getting it ready the best you can in time for the first day of production. That's what we've always done, and that's what we'll try to do again."
The helmer also told Empire magazine he will have full control over the fourth installment - something he didn't have on the third. "They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually," he said. "But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak."
He added that "The best way for me to move forward on films, is that I've got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film. I love Spider-Man so much that I'd like to continue telling Spider-Man stories. But only under those circumstances where I think I can honour him."Ken

Sony Hires Spider-Man 5 & 6 Writer www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=58130Variety reports that Sony Pictures has engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6.
Production on Spider-Man 4 will begin early next year for a May 6, 2011 release. Vanderbilt wrote the first draft of the script for the fourth installment. David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on board to do a rewrite, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script.
The trade adds that director Sam Raimi didn't embrace all of Vanderbilt's ideas, but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios have. Vanderbilt has been hired to pen the fifth and sixth movies, which have an interconnected storyline.
It's unclear whether Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be back for #5 & 6, but if they aren't, Vanderbilt's script would be the blueprint for a franchise reboot.Ken

Sony Rebooting Spider-Man in 2012! www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=62315Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.
Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.
The new chapter in the "Spider-Man" franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.
"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.
"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."
"'Spider-Man' will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."
The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.It sounds to me like Sony reached an impass with Sam Raimi and decided to reboot rather than concede. Considering the massive success of the Spiderman franchise with Raimi behind the camera and Maquire behind the mask, this is not a lightweight decision... to say the least. This could go down as a really, really stupid move, or the best decision ever. Only time will tell. Ken

I think the whole success of the Spiderman franchise was built on what the original creative team brought to it. Completely dumping them and doing a total reboot sounds like a really bad idea. This reminds me a bit of what happened to Batman before the Christian Bale movies. I wish the Indy franchise would do something like this. I'm not suggesting that Ford should be recast but Indy definitely needs some new blood behind the cameras.

It's Official! Marc Webb to Direct Spider-Man! www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=62499Marc Webb, the director of the Golden Globe-nominated Best Picture (500) Days of Summer, will direct the next chapter in the Spider-Man franchise, set to hit theaters summer 2012, it was jointly announced today by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Written by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work closely with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project, which will begin production later this year.
Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, said, "At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."
Arad and Ziskin added jointly, "Over the years, the Spider-Man comics have been told with bold and creative new writers and artists who have re-calibrated the way audiences see Peter Parker. Marc Webb will do for the new direction of the films what so many visionary storytellers have done with the comic books. He is an incredibly talented filmmaker and we look forward to working closely with him on this new adventure."
Webb said, "This is a dream come true and I couldn't be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi's virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to 'take over' from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I'm here because there's an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man."
Stan Lee, co-creator of Spider-Man, added, "I'm excited that Sony has chosen a director with a real penchant and understanding for the character. This is a brave, bold direction for the franchise, and I can't wait to see what Marc comes up with next."
Added Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, "The idea of re-imagining the on-screen story for one of the world's most iconic superheros is sure to deliver an exciting new dimension to Spider-Man fans everywhere. There are volumes of comics and material available to inspire fresh and compelling takes on Peter Parker and his journey as Spidey and we look forward to seeing this come alive onscreen."
Marc Webb has won acclaim with his film debut (500) Days of Summer. He has several MTV VMAs™ including 2009's Best Director award for Green Day's "21 Guns," 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI's "Miss Murder," and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects' "Move Along." The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance.
In addition to two Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture (musical or comedy), his first feature film, (500) Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, has been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature. Webb was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review.Ken

More Spider-Man Reboot Details? www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=62521Yesterday, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios confirmed that (500) Days of Summer helmer Marc Webb is going to direct the Spider-Man reboot. In reporting on the news, the Risky Business blog has some possible more details on the project:
Webb, who has options on two sequels, will now tackle a Jamie Vanderbilt script that sees a “Spider-Man” movie that will look and feel very different from the big movies that went before it.
The plan for the movie is to be in the $80 million range and feature a cast of relative unknowns (so you can quash those Rob Pattinson or Gordon-Levitt rumors at this point). And the story will be pared down to center on a high school kid who is dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though the teen had the power to stop it.
The touchstone for the new movie will not be the 1960s comics, which were the inspiration behind the movies by Raimi, who grew on up on them, but rather this past decade’s “Ultimate Spider-Man” comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst.
Please keep in mind that none of this is confirmed and we may not know for sure until closer to release. Stay tuned for more announcements as they come in...Ken

Marc Webb? I thought 500 Days of Summer was a decent little picture, especially the Harrison Ford cameo, but that movie was a sort of doomed romantic comedy. Can the guy direct a super hero action film? I think they might be making the same mistake the studio did with the last Bond film, by hiring a guy who is completely out of his element. I guess I should give him the benefit of the doubt, seeing as they might focus more on Peter Parker's teenage angst. We'll just have to wait and see.

I guess my real question at this point is, does anyone really want to see a Spiderman movie that focuses less on him using his powers to fight enemies... and more on his teenage angst? Between the new direction and the smaller budget they have planned, I just don't see this being a smart move. I smell a "Twilight" version of Spiderman in our future.... though I hope I'm proven wrong. Ken

I was really disappointed in the last Spidey film mostly because they made the mistake that most films of this genre eventually make...too many characters & villains. Focus people, focus!!! If they can do a stripped down and gritty Spidey along the lines of a Dark Knight, I could be on-board for that. Never was crazy about Toby or Kiersten either. Toby was good in in the second film, but I definitely think he has outgrown the character. I just hope they change the organic webs to Peter Parker inventing the web-shooters.

Update: Logan Lerman in Early Talks for Spider-Man?www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=63009UPDATE: Heat Vision reports that both Sony and the actor's reps say that Lerman is not the frontrunner just yet and that no actual "business discussions" have been made with Lerman.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman revealed to Access Hollywood that he is in early talks with Sony Pictures to play Peter Parker in the Spider-Man reboot.
"There have been a few discussions, it's definitely something I'm looking into," the 18-year-old Lerman said. "It's one of my favorite characters ever and I'm a huge fan of the series. I'd love to have more conversations about it. I'm definitely very interested in it."
Access Hollywood adds that Logan said the interest in him playing Spider-Man was "vice versa" from both him and the studio.
"It's just, you know, conversations are starting. It's a long process with the studio and the producers and everything. But it's definitely a project that I'm really interested in, of course. I'd love to focus on the human element a little bit more. It'd be such a fun experience."It's beginning to smell alot like "Twilight"..... Ken

Avatar Team Meets with Spider-Man Director www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=63364Avatar producer John Landau revealed to MTV that Marc Webb, director of new untitled Spider-Man film, met with James Cameron last week to discuss shooting the movie in 3D. It was announced last week that the studio intends to go that route.
"Last [week] we met the director of [the next 'Spider-Man' film]," Landau said. "[Webb] wants to do the next one in 3D, which they've announced that they want to do. So, we want to try to support that as much as possible."
Landau added that they want to support filmmakers who will shoot in 3D from the get-go.
"Other movies are turning to it now, some of which I agree with, some of which I don't agree with. 'Clash of The Titans' is coming out in 3D; they're converting it very hastily into 3D. I'm not in favor if that," Landau explained. "If you want to shoot a 3D movie, shoot it in 3D."Ken

Confirmed! Emma Stone to Play Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man! www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=70384Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.
The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' upcoming Friends with Benefits.
Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."
Webb added, "The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."
Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.' Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation's comedy The Croods. Stone's recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.Ken

Rhys Ifans to Play the Spider-Man Villain!www.superherohype.com/news/articles/108677-rhys-ifans-to-play-the-spider-man-villainRhys Ifans (Notting Hill) will play the villain, opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, in the next installment of Spider-Man from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012. Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role." The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film. Webb added, "What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."
Spider-Man is being overseen at the studio by Tolmach and Rachel O'Connor. Ifans is represented by United Talent Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Independent Talent Group.
Ifans will next appear in Mr. Nice, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Passion Play, and Columbia Pictures' Anonymous, for director Roland Emmerich.Ken

As a partial revival of the Spiderman thread, went to see the Amazing Spiderman this last weekend here and was highly impressed.....Garfield is a great part for the role, and the story worked really well...It didn't especially feel like a "remake", but more as a continuation of the story, better told..Although a lot of that could be due to Spiderman having no real "face" to change, and a costume that is essentially the same?
Either way, the retelling works...The characters are slightly deeper..The reasoning behind Parker's Hero is a little better worked out, and the development of the character is promising as well..It'll be great to see how the role develops in the next film they make....
I liked several things about the movie, including the nice "homage" to the original creation story with the wrestler background and the work to show Parker's webshooters too... A little more intelligent than perhaps Spiderman is show as being in the original three? I liked the work up..
The Lizard was a good enemy too....Could have been done a touch heavier? But considering what Connors IS in the comics, it works about right I felt....Gwen Stacy as well was an encouraging change from the original films, and a little more "sensible" for me....Emma Stone did a great job with the role...
I was highly impressed by Garfield...He really DOES move like Spiderman (in my head at least)...And the effects work well enough to keep the film moving....The "failures" he finds in trying to swing etc also show a character far more "human" than "super" and I've always liked that about Spidey....It was nice to see on film...
I'd be happy about seeing this again, and it promises a decent series of movies as well...The ending scene leaves no doubt that there'll be another (like all the Marvel films recently eh?)...
It was also nice to see Stan the Man back doing what he does best..I love seeing him in these movies just as much as love seeing Ferrigno in the Hulk ones...It's a cool touch...
Basically, go see it...It's a fun start to a promising summer of movies I think!

I saw the movie yesterday. I really enjoyed it. Can't say it's the best superhero movie of the year, but it was good. I can say one thing, I'm not going to complain about seeing Emma Stone on screen for 2 hours, with her original hair color and some short skirts, etc. *drools*
Anyway, I thought it was well executed. Although I'm not sure how it stacks up against the first 2 Sam Rami Spider-Man movies (as the third was pretty lame), it was still very enjoyable. Go see it!
