The good doctor played by Tom Baker wore several hats - but this one looks remarkably like an un-trimmed Poet. Thoughts?

Bink is the big 4th Doctor fan, but I've heard speculation that one of Baker's hats was a poet. I think there's some anecdotal evidence out there but I can't point to it It does look like it though.

I would have to agree that is does look alot like an untrimmed HJ. Ken

And it would pre-date Raiders too

I can see the Indyness there in the crown. Trimming the brim mentally, it looks like a very good looking Indy. I'm willing to believe that's a Poet. Not that I've ever seen one with an unmodified brim but the felt doesn't look cheap there, whatever that hat is.

...but the felt doesn't look cheap there, whatever that hat is. True dat. However, Tom's reign as the Doctor was before HJ became truly an outsourced hatter (1974-1981).

HJ claim to have a long history of supplying film and tv. Who's to say Raiders was their first? Yes, TB did start in `74 - but he had several hats over the years and I'm not sure when this one is from. I'd have to work out which episode the pic is from.

Just read this on a Dr. Who site: The first hats were bespoke made by the Royal Hatters of Herbert Johnson from fine fur felt in dark brown. There would have been at least three commissioned for his first season and others being made if one was lost or damaged as in "ark in space", this hat was used from robot to brain of morbius. For the Brain of Morbius, Herbert Johnson were commissioned to make a similar style hat from plush fur felt in a dark bottle green colour again at least three of these would have been made this hat was then used in conjunction with the brown hat up to "Armageddon Factor" from then through to "Horns of Nimon" only the brown hat was used.

WOW!!! I'm not really familiar with Dr. Who, but it's very cool to see your initial suspicions were indeed correct! Nice call!!! Oh yeah, and at the risk of sounding like a completely uninformed lame-o, can someone tell me what Dr. Who is? -GCR

Ah! Found a clip from the episode - interestingly called The ARK in Space! You get to see the hat quite well - the top bash is mostly popped out so you can see the block pretty well. Trim the brim and that's the Raiders hat! Strangely, it looks like he's wearing it backwards as the bow is on the wrong side... Sadly at the end of the clip the hat is blasted by a robot! www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hf4RVXWI1A

Very nice! Is that cowhide? How heavy is it?

It is cowhide. Brand spanking new so needs lot's of breaking in! It feels pretty heavy when you pick it up, but not unexpectedly so, it really feels like a jacket that can take some punishment. And for an off the rack, I'm very happy with the fit.

Man, that is a slick jacket, KT! I really like the looks of that Das Boot / Dr. Who jacket, as a great alternative to a regular Indy jacket. I'm especially keen on the predistressed version, though your pics have me rethinking that, KT! A nice black leather jacket to wear with my Grey AB...hmm... -GCR

Oh, I thought this was just about the Dr. Who hat. I didn't realize KT posted a pic of his new jacket in here.....sorry I missed it earlier. I really like that coat. It looks good on you. Speaking of Dr. Who by the way......one of the actors that played him just joined the cast of Heroes. He plays an inivisble man named Claude.

That is a snazzy coat, KT! Looks great on you. I haven't followed Dr. Who much at all, new or old series, but after watching a brief episode a few weeks ago and seeing that "Ark" post of Pagey's I'm wondering how I could have missed this show growing up. It looks very entertaining! And yes, that hat's got something VERY INDY about it - even in the wrong bash and wider brim.

9th! Good Lord how many were there all together? I've caught bits and pieces of the show both new and old over the years and I didn't really understand what was going on. I know the theme music has always stayed with me.

Cheers guys! I thought you'd like to see a nice piece of leather, you are very kind.
Harry, we're up to the 10th Doctor on the TV series and Peter Cushing who did the movies in the 70's I think.
