Hello everyone. I thought I would show a few pics comparing the old style S&W recessed large brass medallion grips to the new issue model 22 of 1917 grips that you can buy from S&W on their website. The old grips you see are the same style as the Bapty Raiders shooter. The new version gips you see have a style that is very much their own. I could nitpick the details, but a picture speaks...blah blah blah. Here you go:

Nice comparison Andy! I had no idea there was such a difference between the original style and the current style. Hm...why must people feel the need to "tweak" things like this? How hard would it have been to simply make the new grips like the older grips? Ah well, I much prefer the older style anyway. Thanks for the pics...now I know if I ever get my hands on a good S&W of my own, I'll need to keep an eye out for original grips as well. -GCR

Thanks guys! I agree though, I like the old style better. But man is the wood and finish of these new grips really beautiful.

I'm a sucker for the old grips. I agree...if it is not broke, don't fix it. But they are pretty close, especially to the "Untrained Indy Eye"

I replaced my worn 1917 grips with black plastic reproductions of the original bakelite grips. They look great and have the old pre-medallion S&W logo. The black checkered grips give the gun a great vintage look.
