Very nice fed, Fedoraman! I've been waiting to see that hat for a while! I like it. Looks very smoothe. Aha! There, PH. There's one with a darker ribbon. I really like how the colors on both felts are very close. Looks good! How's it feel?

Looks great man, thanks for sharing! I like the color and that green liner is really looking better to me each time I see it. Is that a 5-1/2" crown height? Ken

Wow, that does look very nice and yes the ribbon looks really good as well. Did you bash that yourself? I'm guessing the JP Beaver is right up there with the AB Deluxe price wise....isn't it? After seeing this hat and Tone's I'm suprised more people aren't talking about JP's hats as well. They really look great. I'd say were all pretty lucky having some of the finest hat vendors around making Indy hats for us.

Lid feels and fits very nice with a velvet smooth finish. The crown is 6" as the size is 7 1/2.
The ribbon reminds me alot of the stock that Pyro found a long time ago, but this is just a touch darker and about 1/8" wider which looks good on this size...

Wow, a 6" crown huh? I was thinking that most folks got a 5-1/2 crown and thought this one looked a little taller. But, I was thinking the close camera proximity might be adding that effect. All that matters is that is looks good on your head shape anyway. Ken

AHA! See Tone? How about a big bowl of STFU? I don't think RagingBlues was asking you what the crown height was, anyway, you farging know it all. Although it did look like a 5 3/4" to me, too. But that's from over here. YOU have no excuse, biznatch!

Most folks don't wear a size 7 1/2 - the 6" crown holds the dimensions/ratio of the smaller sizes. Plus it takes attention away from my ugly mug Jimmy bashed this one - I usually go with open crown, but I wanted to see how his bash looked for comparison/contrast to my other "Indy's".

Fedoraman, Wiggles is, literally, a dog. He hops on here from time to time - usally bitter - because he can't get a legitimate registration on this forum. He tends to say those things others might really love to say but are too well-mannered and more mature. It's theraputic in a way; though he rarely wanders out of that bed. That is very cool to see an adjusted ribbon width in effect to fit someone's features. It does bring it all into proportion nicely. That hat does look VERY soft. Pitfall, I don't know that the JPD will pick up in popularity, at least openly, but it's plain to see that it's a hat well worth consideration among the others.

So I'm sitting here looking at this fed and this question keeps popping up. I like a darker ribbon myself. That seems to be the general consensus on preference for the Raiders ribbon. But, the reason I'm hesitant to put a black ribbon on the JPD is that it would seem to stand out too much against the fed. It almost looks too black against this shade of brown. Does anyone else slightly agree? Disagree? Has to be black, no matter what? I'm looking at pic 4 above (with the white balance set). And Fedoraman, I am NOT saying that hat looks bad. I like it! I am simply pondering if the general preference on the ribbon has to be black over brown even if it's potentially too black. I really like the brown ribbon on mine but can't get across that the details of the ribbon are darker than the hat photographs. Thoughts?

Boy, I don't know. The black ribbon, depending how dirty you get the hat, will fade somewhat and become lighter. My black ribbon on my Aukbra has done that. I have a feeling with the brown on that JP it might stand out more at first but the more you wear it and get use out of it the more likely both colors will fade and won't contrast as much. I wouldn't go with black unless your 100% sure of it yourself and screw screen accuracy. What matters is if your happy with it yourself.

I personally prefer the ribbon to be a darker shade of the same color the hat is, so yes I like the dark brown ribbon with a brown hat, as well as a charcoal ribbon with a gray hat.
I do think though that the relationship between the black ribbon and the brown hat on the JPD hat looks pretty nice too. I think it depends a lot on how the two shades work together, and some stick out more than others. The Keppler comes to mind as a black/brown combination that I don't think looks quite right to me, but I don't see the same issue with the JPD.

I'm a brown hat, brown ribbon guy myself. That was always my biggest gripe with other hats I've had in the past, such as my old (now deceased) Stetson temple and my Indiana Millers. The ribbon color on those hats looked good when new. It wasn't really black, but it wasn't brown, either. It was sort of a dark, smoky, ash/charcoal/brownishness. As I said, at first, it looked great, but as time went on, and the ribbon faded, it looked horrible. The color turned out to be more gray than anything. And, of course, the hats faded as well, so the contrast became rather bizarre. With a dark brown ribbon, the colors contrast remains consistant as both ribbon and felt fade with wear and age. My Akubra's dark brown ribbon has faded somewhat, but so has the hat, and none of the contrast has been lost, even after 3 yeasr of hard wear. A black ribbon could possibly pose problems similar to those I experienced with the Stetson and Miller ribbons, though I imagine it would not be as severe.
In short, however, do I think a black ribbon looks good on a brown hat? Heck, yeah! And Fedoraman, that is one FINE looking hat! I was originally going to have JP reblock my Akubra FD and one of my old Millers. But now, this thread and Tone's thread have convinced me to just get a whole new JPD hat! They really look great!

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I've kind of teetered on the darker,brownish-could be black but isn't quite black when the light hits it choice as well. It's nice to see that it's not completely lost. I liked the black on the Keppler, but the hat itself is a bit "red" and I don't know that a brown ribbon would sit right with it. Fedora's AB "dark brown" ribbon is a really nice dark brown. (Not the vintage, but the standard dark brown he has available.)
Fedoraman, I do want to point out I'm not taking shots at your hat here. It's just that I was noticing the distinction between the black and brown ribbons on the JPD felt and I got to wondering if the majority choice of ribbon was black or brown.
GCR, I'm looking forward to seeing what you pull off with the JPD. It's a great "bash it yourself" fed.

GCR, I'm looking forward to seeing what you pull off with the JPD. It's a great "bash it yourself" fed. I can hardly wait to get my hands on one of these JPD's! As soon as that end of the month paycheck hits my desk, ka-ching! It's hat buyin' time! Merry Xmas to me! I'm glad to hear the JPD is a good hat to bash yourself. I love bashing my own hats...I was in a Burlington Coat Factory a couple weeks ago, and they had a few shelves loaded with a bunch of fur-felt hats from the Czech Republic. Some were open crown, and it took everything in me to keep from buying them all (they were SO incredibley CHEAP!) just to bring them home practice bashing and creasing...man, do I have a problem... Hey, Fedoraman, how does the Beaver felt JPD compare with the likes of an AB Beaver? -GCR

Hey, Fedoraman, how does the Beaver felt JPD compare with the likes of an AB Beaver? -GCR It is just as smooth but the color is a little darker. I would say it is also a little heavier/thicker but we are talking the SMALLEST amount here and you cannot tell while on your noggin. One thing that is definitely better than my AB beaver is that this hat fits me like a glove while Steve's 7 1/2 block runs more like a 7 5/8. On my head anyway...
