I just read about a new movie coming out soon, about serial killers in the 1940's. It stars John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Salma Hayek, and will feature fedora clad detectives and murder. www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=14267Video Clip: www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19762I'm sure the fedoras will be of the tapered variety, but... given the nature of the story and the period it's set in, there is some hope it will be good. Isn't there? Ken

Cool news! Thanks for posting, Ken! This seems like my kind of movie...aside from the Indy or Indy related adventure type stuff, I'm also a big fan of the old-school, hard-boiled detective genre. Maybe this flick will succeed where other recent films have failed (like The Black Dahlia, which I found very disappointing). I wouldn't give up hope for the fedoras, either. While the one Gandolfini sports in the clip may have a somewhat narrow brim, the sides seem fairly straight and it's got a nice and tight front pinch. Anyways, sounds like a movie worth checking out to me! -GCR

This is the movie A5 mentioned in the chat room last week. I was going to look it up but never got the chance.
After getting back into collecting gear and looking at all the different Indy fedora styles I find myself loathing the way the hat's are styled in modern movies set in the 30's and 40's like this one. They all tend to look like crap to me. It's almost like they don't even put any thought into it.
I don't know if it was pure luck or if it was Noodleman's sense of style but the Raiders hat is the best looking modern day fedora I've seen.

There were actually people in the chat room last week? ;D Just kidding...it's been a while since I've been there, but the last few times I popped in, there was nothing going on. As for the hats in movies, I agree, to an extent. I love the Raiders style fedora, it is my absolute favorite style of fedora, period. BUT, as I'm sure you know, the "Golden Era" featured a wide variety of crown heights, shapes, brim widths, felt colors and ribbons. Not every hat looked like a Raiders hat. So seeing hats with shorter brims or crowns or tapered or whatever, doesn't bother me as much. What bothers ME is watching a modern day film (or any film made AFTER the golden era but attempting to duplicate the look of the era) where all the fedora's are pre-shaped with the top dent and side dents blocked into the hat. Granted, they existed back then, but they were not as common as they are today. Take a look at any old movie or at some old photographs and you'll see what I mean. Almost all the men's hats have a certain "hand-bashed" look to them. They aren't cleanly-shaped, cookie-cutter fedoras like some costume departments use for that period. THAT is my gripe with modern movies portraying the golden era. Weird gripe, I know. ;D -GCR
