I'm a big fan of the movie The Illusionist, so my wife and I thought we'd give The Prestige a viewing last night. That was two hours I'll never get back.
Maybe I'm dense (probably), but when a movie takes me 30 minutes and a near migraine to even remotely figure out what had just transpired, it's really pointless.
Also, my other big gripe is the complete lack of attention to historical detail and locations. Some of the movie allegedly takes place in Colorado Springs where I live and features Tesla (David Bowie does a fine job) as a somewhat central character. Well, I can assure you this, the movie producers obviously never set foot in Colorado Springs. It looked more like the Swiss Alps, than the Springs!

I'm very sorry to hear this -- I have both movies on DVD & was looking forward to seeing them...I guess I'll put in The Illusionist first, huh??

I'm with you, Pastimesteve. I saw them both, and while neither impressed me, I was far more disappointed in "The Prestige". "The Illusionist" wasn't my favorite movie ever, but it was OK. "The Prestige" however, was indeed a waste of my life. I had high hopes, and I will admit certain parts of the film were OK, but it really got too multi-layered (i.e. CONFUSING) when you have Bale's character reading Jackman's diary, which prompts a flashback, and in the flashback, Jackman's character is reading Bale's diary, which prompts another flashback (inside a flashback) ... anyone else have a headache yet? -GCR

I thought that The Prestige was amazing, few writers put that much thought into a script.

I liked them both quite a bit, but found the Prestige the better among the two. I rented them both in one weekend. So magical. I love Colorado Springs though. Garden of the Gods is awesome and so is 7 Falls. There is a house just around the bend from 7 Falls which has giant steel statues in front of the house. I mean, 20-30 ft tall. Know anything about this house?

Agent5 -- do you remember the street? I'm wondering if that's the Starr Kempf (sp?) house? He's a now-deceased artist that created quite a stir over the display of his art. Some of his neighbors thought it was an eyesore and wanted it removed.

No, I don't. We actually made a wrong turn near the falls and found it by accident. There was a plaque in front of the home saying he was a college professor who made them for his wife and that's all I can recall. I took some pics of my wife in front of the house but none digital so I can't post them. I remember one of the statues was of a giant bird. He also had gargoyles hanging off his roof, which was cool. An amazing house, to say the least. Love to know the story behind it.

I watched The Prestige on my computer a few weeks ago. At first I found it hard to follow but once I got adjusted to it I really enjoyed the story and the plot. It kept me guessing until the end. I think Bale , Jackman and Caine did a damn good job in the film. I thought it was really good and I'd watch it again.

Okay, I watched The Prestige last night, and I enjoyed it! I could see how it could potentially get confusing, with the 'flashback within a flashback' jazz, but if you paid attention it all made sense. Incredible ending!! I was wondering why the opening shot in the film was a bunch of tophats strewn all over the woods... ~Jace
