I haven't seen it yet. Not all comics can really translate to live action. I wonder if this is one of them? There's a fine line between cool and cheesey. I can say this, I am seriously digging Sam Elliott's hat.

From what I'm hearing it doesn't do a bad job translating to film the problem is that it doesn't go far enough. They're trying to make a dark supernatural character fit in with the likes of Superman, Batman and Spider-Man when Ghost Rider should be rated R and be one step beyond Blade. Certain characters should not be "watered down" to make them "Family Friendly". I saw the same problem with The Punisher film. It was violent but nowhere near what the character is like in the books.
Some people over at COW are speculating that the hat Sam is wearing may be an Akubra Fed.

Wow, now that's interesting. His hat doesn't have that weird Akubra bow on it but that could have easily been changed, of course. He is sporting a C-Crown which is my favorite. I checked out the gallery on the movie website. He certainly has an Indy look in some shots. He also takes the weathered hat idea to a new level. I think he wears two different hats. The daytime hat looks to have a shorter more wavy brim and a lighter color than the wider brim, brown night scenes hat. The daytime hat looks a lot like a Stetson Temple and by that I mean it looks pretty rough.

Well, a few think because of the c-crown that it could be a DP hat as well. I did notice that in the nightime shots of the hat the brim does look better and wider. The one daytime shot of the hat that I saw looks like it was dunked in the water and never reblocked.....and the brim looks smaller. I plan on going to see this film by the way. I don't really care what the reviews are saying. I think it looks pretty good and the choice of films over the last few months has been rather blah so I'm looking for a good "popcorn flick" to take my mind off of everyday crap. This looks like it will do the trick.

Well, I went and saw Ghost Rider tonight. I liked it. I thought it was a good movie. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. I pretty much agree with what's been said by some others on the net. The film seemed "watered down". This character isn't "kid friendly". The film would have benefited from a stronger plot and villain. It seemed like they were an after thought. They were cool looking but really didn't seem that threatening. If anyone saw the first Blade film Blackheart (the main villain in Ghost Rider) comes off as a "poor man's" Deacon Frost. The "end game" for both villains was very similar as well. I think Cage did a good job but the younger version of his character didn't act to distraught after discovering something crucial about his father. As far as the older Johnny Blaze played by Cage goes he seemed to be one part Evel Knievel and one part Elvis. ;D Cage could have played him dark and brooding but he did something different with it and I enjoyed watching him. I wish they would have done more with Sam Elliot's character. There is one scene toward the end that is really cool looking and the song "Ghost riders in the Sky" is playing over it. I liked that and it gave the film an "Old Western" type of vibe. The FX were really good I thought.....especially Ghost Rider and the bike. The character and film had a lot of potential and they kind of dropped the ball by trying to make it appeal to everyone. There were a few scenes that might scare some little kids but nothing bloody or disgusting. The film seems to be doing well. I'd like to see them make a sequel and step it up a notch. All in all I give it a . See it once at the theater and then wait for it to come out on DVD.
