We are going to see "Superman Returns" tonight, and I expect it to be very well done. Everything so far looks great, and we even watched "Superman" yesterday to get in the spirit.
So, is anyone else going on opening night?

You guys are going to love it....especially if your a fan of the Reeve movies. I went to the very first showing here in Ft. Wayne last night at 10pm. The theater was packed and at one point the manager came in before the show started and asked everyone if they were there for the right time. Seems they had more people in the 10pm showing than they sold tickets for. The movie is almost 3 hours......I think it's 2:34 or 40 minutes. They played the Spidey 3 teaser with it and the place went nuts. I know now why Singer picked Routh to play Superman.....he looks and sounds like Christopher Reeve in the film. He even says one or two lines from the first movie too. It was weird sitting there watching the beginning of the film because it has the same opening as the old films and the original music. Gave me goosebumps. I felt like I was a kid again. Get to the theater early because the place is going to be busy.

yea i liked the film alot. I mean i wish there was more fighting, but really superman doesnt fit as much as he does save people. They did a great job, lois wasnt the best, but it was still a great film. And all the referance to CR was very cool.

One thing I'm hoping is if the make anymore give Superman someone on his own level to fight. I would be nice to see his suit get messed up too like in the books.

Thanks Canyon... Pitfall, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie...though I must admit, I skipped right over your review so far. I didn't want to take the chance on finding something out about the movie that I don't know yet. I really like to be surprised, and hate when people spoil things like that. I know you weren't doing that, but I didn't want to get any info at all. I actually haven't even watched the Spiderman teaser yet either. I want to see that for the first time, in the theater as well. Ken

Ken,
Have a great time with the family at the show tonight. Check your popcorn, make sure there is no Kryptonite in there.
Best Wishes, John

A lot of the time the trailers give away to much. About the Spidey teaser......I'm not sure if it's attached to every viewing of the film. You might end up not seeing it. If that's the case you can always see it online. Speaking of knowing to much. I flipped through the "storybook" of Pirates 2 and ruined the ending for myself.......Well, maybe it will be different onscreen......I hope.

Thanks John! I wouldn't want to bust a tooth off on a hunk of Kryptonite! I think my real Kryptonite (or atleast one of them), would be people that talk during movies or kick the seats in front of them. That drives me crazy!! Ken

Just back from the theater.... and "Superman Returns" does indeed rock!! I have to go eat something, but will post my thoughts (not spoilers) on it later. Definitely go, if you have ever liked Superman. Ken

I think my real Kryptonite (or atleast one of them), would be people that talk during movies or kick the seats in front of them. That drives me crazy!! Ken I can't stand that! That falls under my, "I'm done making excuses for others' ignorance" peeves. You're in a theater (where, you must know, everyone comes to enjoy what's on the screen) not at home with a remote and a pause button so you can ask, "What does that mean?" or "Oooh, I think I know what's going to happen." Or worse.........the "Oh, watch this. Watch this! Watch what happens, I love this part!" person. SHUT UP and watch the movie! The formula is such that it will all be explained in the end! We don't care that you've seen it before and certainly don't want to hear what you're thinking about the film! And if you ask that guy to pass you the popcorn one more time in anything less than the decibel of an elephant's warning, I'm going to KILL YOU in the parking lot! Oddly enough, a woman once brought an infant into the theater and it began to cry the way babies do and this didn't bother me, because she had no control to shush the kid at that age and it was too young to be aware of the situation. She got up and left with her baby after a few minutes. I wasn't annoyed so much as felt bad for the mother. ....but when you're old enough to know better and are still that stupid..........It's hard to make excuses for people's ignorance anymore..... And yes, I loved Superman I with Christopher Reeve (John Williams' score afterall, too.) So it seems this is very worth going to see in the theater, even if the loudies have to be tolerated. It's very reassuring to hear good feedback from you guys thus far!

I couldn't agree with you more Tone. I don't pay to go see movies, to have to nearly come to blows with some schmuck about disturbing everybody. It's gotten to the point, where we only go to the theater once in a while now, because it's just not worth the risk. I love going to see movies in the theater, but every other time we go, there is an issue of some kind. The general level of ignorance and lack of respect for others has greatly increased in my lifetime. I can only imagine what the future might hold in regards to public behavior or driving habits.
Now.....on to Superman Returns.
I must say that not only did they produce a truly fantastic Superman movie by itself, but also managed to pay tribute to Christopher Reeve, his Superman movies, the older TV series, and the comic versions as well. The continuity of the Kent farm, the awesome William's soundtrack, Brando's lines, the use of lines from Christopher Reeve's movies, a bunch of semi-hidden scene tributes, and a general respect for the character of Superman himself, really helped to sell this movie.
The special effects were seamless and of the highest level. His flying and use of powers were as I always imagined them to be, and without the limitations imposed in 1978 and the early 80's.
Brandon Routh did a great job on all counts, and should be well received by everyone in this role. A special dedication to Christopher and Dana Reeve at the beginning of the end credits, even received an applause in the theater. That should tell you that people were satisfied with a job well done.
Take the kids, take the parents, take a friend.... but, go see it yourself no matter what.

Now that I've had a day or two to reflect on the film I've got a few minor gripes with the plot and a few missed opportunities that could have made this film perfect.
Routh was good but I think he needed more lines. I would have liked to see him and Spacey have more of a "discussion". It just seemed like Reeve's Superman would have been more emotional and said more.
The flight scenes were great but I would have liked to see a few casual "take offs". I keep thinking about that scene in Superman: The movie where Reeve's Superman saves that cat in a tree and when he takes off it's kind of at an angle and he twists around and waves at the girl. Now even though that movie's FX are dated little things like that made it look believable. I didn't see anything like that in the new film. Most of Routh's take off's were rather fast and straight up and down.
The little plot holes here and there could have been addressed very easily and wouldn't have taken much time. Now these aren't related to the stuff that was left open for the sequel......just things that should have been thought out before the final script draft.
The only time my audience applauded during the film was at the Spidey 3 teaser.
Most of the people were leaving before the Christopher and Dana Reeve tribute. I think that should have been the first thing on the screen after the Routh flew by the camera.
Speaking of which......there were quite a few times I kind of felt sad...especially in the final shot because it would remind me of Reeve as Superman.
Don't get me wrong it's still a great family movie and still alot of fun. Hopefully Singer cuts loose in the next one and gives us more of the current comic book take on him and the villains. I'd love to see Brainac, Bizarro, Darkseid or Metallo. Seeing Superman stop some kind of alien invasion would be cool.

Well they need to make special seats for you taller fellas.. I'm almost 6'1", which really isn't tall.... but, the seats in our theaters have high backs, and are at staggered heights, like a stadium. So, unless you are really tall.... they aren't much of a problem. I guess you could sit in the back! But, watching them at home gives you full control over the environment as well, and that's a huge plus. Ken

Well, I guess I'd still have to sit at the front, seeing as I'm only 5' 2" The only major problems that I have in a cinema, is if someone very tall sits right in front of me. Oh, and also if I have someone kicking the back of my seat. Time to get the whip out!

No, the beauty of stadium seating is that everyone can see, so your height doesn't matter. The whole theater is on an decline down toward the screen.

My wife and I just got back from seeing Superman. This is the first film we've seen since Batman Begins last summer. $9.50 for a ticket . Man, that's rough. I really enjoyed the film. I loved all the homages to the older films. Hearing Williams score again and seeing the opening credits fly by as the did in the older films really helped tie this movie to the Reeves films. Finally, for the first time I got a sense of the speed he could fly. Just awesome! -Anthony

Even thought it was flawed IMO, I enjoyed it for nostalgia's sake. Routh did a nice job of playing Reeve playing Superman. I won't go into my list of nitpicks , but it was kinda weird seeing an angst-ridden Soups who feels a little sorry for himself , is tempted to be a homewrecker, and has one night stands without calling again ;D . The credits and the score (even though still not the same IMO, without Williams and the London Philharmonic), the nods to the original, as well as the tribute to the Reeves at the end was very nice. The kid and the very likable boyfriend looks like it will be tough to make sequels though.

i just saw 3d superman, and it was veryyy cool. The shot of the kent farm in teh beginning was the best full effect of the 3d, since it was stiller and the lighting was good. You had a chance to focus on that shot better and get the 3d feel. The other shots were sweet too, but some of the action scenes make it harder to see the 3d as good, or maybe im just too into the film to notice as much. Definitely go see this movie 3d, its a very cool experience. I didnt like that they had assigned seats according to ur ticket though. IT was very annoying and i almost got split up from my friend and his gf.

I saw it for the second time on Monday night. Our intention was to see it at the IMAX, so we could enjoy the 3D parts as well. The shows were sold out for the day however, so we opted to see it again in our regular 2D theater. I do plan to catch it in 3D at some point, as I know it must look great. I really enjoyed the movie more the second time around. Ken
