Just started this thread in case any of you go so you can give a report. I want to take my son, who wants to see it, but as usual I want to know if it's okay for a 6 year old. I try to stay away from too much violence although they are promoting this on Cartoon Network. I think it looks so much better than Narnia, but nowhere near as kick ass as Lord of the Rings. Can't wait to see some reviews.

I was interested in this movie earlier in the year, base only on the previews. Learning more about the series and the guy that wrote the books has changed my mind.
A Narnia this will never be, as it's mainly a direct ripoff and intentional jab at the Narnia series. All seven Chronicles Of Narnia books have been signed to be made for the big screen, given the enormous success of the first film. So, The Golden Compass has some pretty big shoes to fill if the goal is to do as well.

It does look like a Narnia, doesn't it, but then Narnia had some shades of Lord of the Rings. Still, I think it looks cool. I like the actors, the effects look pretty good and I can't wait to see what people think of it. The trailer for Narnia looked really good but I thought it was rather boring after seeing it. I bought it for my son and he was just as bored. I guess TGC gets bad reviews I'll wait for dvd. I'm sure at least one member here will see it as I'd like a more personal review rather than an actual movie critic.

I never trust or read reviews by critics, though I understand your need to do so to check for violence for your son.
There is a specific reason that the Narnia series and The Lord Of The Rings series share some similarities though. The two authors, Lewis and Tolkien were very good friends. They used to sit in coffee shops together discussing ideas and actually wrote both series of books during the same period of time as each other as well.

Sam Elliot was on TV this morning giving an interview (He's in this movie) and he said it's not really a kids movie. It has a lot of dark undertones.
To me it kinda looks more like a mix of Narnia with an action movie.......I wouldn't mind seeing this but I think I want to see I AM LEGEND and National Treasure 2 more......
Sweeney Todd looks kinda interesting too.

4 stars from Roger Ebert! That means two big thumbs up. I think I may have to see this one in the theaters. Here's his review for those who may be interested.

Lately, I've agreed with most of Rogers reviews of the movies I've seen. So it's been easier for me to trust his judgement and go see the film. Like I said....there are a few films I want to see so right now it's the lack of "play money" that's keeping me away. Even going by myself costs a small fortune.

i saw the film. For not knowing the story or the films (havent even read that review above yet) I felt the movie was pretty crappy story wise, in its flow more than anything. I never had a real sense of buildup of what we were trying to get to or what was exactly going on. I think the film ended too soon too, like i wanted to see another big fight of some sort. I was honestly pretty bored. The best parts of the film were the effects, the polar bears were great and the animals looks amazing too. Alot of big names too, Christopher lee and Ian Maculm, which made me feel like i was in LOTR again lol. My favorite thing about the film was the preview for Price Caspin coming out in May. Otherwise very disapointed. I mean i never read harry potter and the films work great for me, same with LOTR the movies are fantastic and i never read the book still. I just dont think theres enough to this story. Hopefully if they continue to the next 2 films it will get better, because ehhhh it was ok.
Oh yea it is somewhat adult... some pretty violent finishing moves when the polar bears fight, that was actually the best part of the movie.

Another observation about Tolkien and Lewis is they were both Christians. This influence can be seen directly in Narnia, and I'm sure you are all aware of the portrayals there. Conversely, The Golden Compass is just about as anti-Christian as anything ever published. Here's an interesting link that shed some light on it for me, and why I won't allow my daughter to see it: snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.aspI'm certainly NOT trying to force my beliefs on anyone! Just sharing information....

The next two movies may not even be made at this point. Ken

I saw TGC and found to be bored throughout most of the movie like indakin was. My wife liked it. I was tired so maybe that was it. Or maybe it was just that bad.

He's an athiest that wrote the "His Dark Materials" trilogy specifically to turn children away from Christianity. The bad guys in the story are the church, the good guys are daemon, and in the end, they kill God... specifically named YAHWEH. That's the abbreviated version of the name that Moses wrote down when God told him His name. He is welcome to his own views, as I am welcome to oppose them. What seemed like an innocent fantasy story to me at first, became something I'm not interested in at all. Ken

I watched the movie before I knew what it was about. It was dreary and depressing and seemed to be very unfocused. It just had such a negative tone and negative agenda. They're not opposing the Nazis or a fictious evil Galactic Empire. They're opposing Christianity, an institution that billions around the world believe in and revere. No institution is above criticism. I do respect the opinions of those who may have critical viewpoints regarding Christianity today but I can't support those who can only promote their set of values by attacking or misrepresenting the values of others. Casting God as the ultimate villain is so offensive and disrespectful on so many levels. Marketing such a negative agenda to children in the guise of an innocent fantasy adventure ranks right down with using Joe Camel to promote cigarettes to kids.
