Shuttle Astronauts To Carry Lightsaber - Original 'Star Wars' Prop To Be Sent Into Spacewww.news4jax.com/technology/13996797/detail.htmlHOUSTON -- Astronauts on space shuttle Discovery will have a little something extra in their gear when they blast off in October: Luke Skywalker's original Jedi lightsaber.
As part of the 30th anniversary celebration of "Star Wars," NASA has agreed to carry the prop weapon into orbit and jettison it in space.
collectSPACE.com said the lightsaber will be handed over to the space agency by Chewbacca at the Oakland Airport, not far from George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch.
It reported the priceless piece will be greeted in Houston by a group of Stormtroopers, along with R2D2.Ken

I don't believe it... Luke's lightsaber? Gee... I would have sent freakin Jar Jar instead... or Vader's Tie fighter model! That would be great to see it spinning into space!!! Seriously I think they should bring it back after the trip, that would be cool... What's gonna be next? Lucas' flanelle shirt?

I agree. It would be like burying Indy's whip from Raiders inside a tomb somewhere. It might seem poetic, but what is the real point? Can anyone enjoy seeing Luke's lightsaber while's its out in space? It belongs in a museum. Ken

This seems a bit strange...I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that this prop WAS in a museum somewhere...I think it was the Smithsonian, maybe? I know they have the jacket, hat and whip from a couple of the Indy films there, but, not being an avid "Star Wars" fan I don't remember if they had any Star Wars stuff as well. Anyways, if it's NOT there, it should be. Seems pointless to just launch it out into space where it'll probably end up crashing into a satellite and knocking out TV to half the country during the last 5 minutes of the superbowl or something. ;D Who's idea was this, anyway? -GCR

I have to admit I still think that it's kind of cool that this ultimate prop from the ultimate space film, is really going to be floating around in space. I'll look up at the night sky and think of Luke's lightsaber floating somewhere overhead.
