I was curious if anyone here knows how to use Maya? I am about to take lessons on it and I thought if anyone here might have any advice.

I know what it is, and have a friend with a bootleg copy. But, I have never seen it being used. I know that doesn't help, but I didn't want you to think we were ignoring you! Ken

;D Re-reading the thread title, I can see the misconception. Harry, Maya is a 3D software program that is used to do CGI work. Photoshop is a great compliment to Maya. Since so many people here used PS I thought maybe someone has knew Maya as well.

Photoshop is a walk in the park in comparison to any 3D app, you have to build your objects in 3D, apply surfaces and textures then light them. Then there's the animation aspect on top of that too. I've tried on several occasions to learn Cinema 4D and have given up in frustration each time! The learning curve is that steep. Im sure with the right grasp of the basics it's not that bad. But get a good nights' sleep before hands and drink plenty of coffee!

Pretty much what KT said up there. Maya is "Work". In that matter it is a completely different mindset for 3D graphics and CGI. Comparatively, it's like looking at the workings of a video game from the coding side rather than the fun of playing it. Some great stuff to be done with Maya, but it's an entirely focused discipline. Take courses!

I hear you Tone. I have a friend who does nothing else but render objects all day. She's given me some quick lessons but I want to take some real courses. I thought some people here might have worked with it. It sounds like some of you have. Thanks

Thanks for the info Blues. I'll have to look into this further. Sounds like something I might enjoy tinkering with. They have a school here in town that is offering game design courses that I've thought about taking. Messing with something like this might give me an idea on what taking those courses might entail.

this software is some good fun. However there is really a TON that goes into learning this software. I went to school for 3 yrs in SF, CA working only on Maya and after graduating i had only scraped the surface of what that program can accomplish. And, yes...PS and Maya go hand in hand. You will practicly do all of your texuring in PS. I could go on and on all day about this as 3D animation is awesome!!! There really is ALOT of work that goes into becoming good and well versed in how this software works. If you get to the point where you have any questions about it you can shoot me a PM. Also, if you are looking for some good "How To" books i can suggest a few that might come in handy...just let me know.
