well guys I jsut bought a bag of fullers earth cat litter at Petco... I was just wondering that whe i sprinkle it on my NEW wested... if the jacket were to get wet in..say the rain.. would it begin to drip muddy water... or would the fullers pretty much stay put?

I don't think it's going to drip muddy water but I do believe it will come off. My Wested is still covered in it and I have yet to clean it off. Good way to test it. Take some FE and put a small amount on a certain spot of the jacket. Then take a spray bottle after putting it on their and squirt water on it and see what it does.

fullers earth is kitty litter. We use it down at the firedepartment as absorbant.

You know, it's one of the easiest items to find and I just keep forgetting to pick up a bag of the stuff. With Halloween coming up, it's a must have!

Just remember not to leave it sit on whatever you plan on covering it with for weeks at a time. It settles in and it's a pain to get off if you want to clean the gear back up.

I asked at my local chemist, whilst they don't stock it anymore they can order the powered "stomach remedy" (Yup, fullers earth again) for 85p for 100g that approx $1.60 for 3.5 ounces. So do i get the award for the cheapest and the most expensive fullers earth?

Sure, KT. You've covered the widest range of pricing for the same product! ;D I have no idea if this will help anybody but I was mainly curious to give this a try. Basically, spent 99 cents on a 5 lb bag at a 99 cent store. My Kitty Litter experiment. First, it IS harder to find cat litter with fuller's earth in than I thought. (Everything now has flavor crystals and everything except Fuller's Earth.) At least in the stores around here. So I bought "Blue Ribbon D.E." from the 99 cent store. Diatomaceous Earth is the ingredient. Litter is in larger pebbles and must be ground to a powder.... Powder form can be seen on the edges of the mug. Didn't crush every single piece as this was an experiment. At Schmuck Factor 9 with clean goat jacket and fedora. Just dumped some on the coat lightly. Added some to the hat, used a soft brush to detail segments, but mainly just tossed it on there. (I wasn't going for realism so much as visual reference - basically, could ground cat litter pass as believably for simulated dust as much as Fullers Earth? I think it works convincingly well.) Dusty Fedora. Wiping off the jacket with a wet paper towel. It does take more than one attempt to get it clean but it does come off. The Fed still had remnants but also keep in mind this Fed didn't start out completely clean either. You can see where the dust remains in the felt after it's been brushed. I'm sure the obvious suggestion is to use "dirt" for simulated dirt ;D but in those instances where dirt might not be handy, this stuff works well.

Shortly after this experiment was done Tone was attacked by a group of stray cats looking to use the restroom. ;D Thanks for trying that out for all of us, Tone. Looks just as good at the Fullers Earth only maybe a little bit lighter in color than the sample G-Mann sent me.

Tone, Great, educational experiment! Now that you have proven what KT has been talking about for months, you can start to reap the rewards from your hard work. Just imagine it.... "Tone's Magic Movie Dust" .99 Cents for a 5 lb. bag = .198 Cents per lb. / Your cost Repack it into smaller bags/containers and sell it to mindless Indy fans for $5.00 per lb. all day! Can you say... Fortune & Glory?? I knew you could! Ken

It looks a lot like who the jacket does when they escape from the WOS. Like I've been saying (for months 10:1 price difference, you can't loose .

I just bought some "Thrifty Sorb" from Advance Auto this past weekend. It's used to soak up oil spills and it's made of Fuller's Earth. I paid $5.98 for 40 lbs. It's particulate, like kitty litter, but if you want to make dust you could use a mortar and pestle like someone else suggested. Just be careful not to inhale too much of the stuff. The nice thing is that it isn't fragranced like a lot of the kitty litters are. I'm currently working on distressing a replica MarkVII bag for my husband.
