I just recieved the jacket TRH sold on ebay. It's fascinating... to me at least. He didn't really say a lot about it on the auction but as it was my size and looked slightly beat up I thought I'd buy it as a beater. What I didn't count on was a jacket with a bit of history. First thing it's a pretty early jacket it has a cotton collar stand, it has huge pockets, the pleats are tiny (1 inch if that), and the strap configuration is weird, the front strap ends almost inside the handwarmer and the back strap is sewn INSIDE the back panel instead of outside. It's a dark brown type colour and is VERY soft even softer than my current 2 year old Auth Brown. The stormflap is slightly wider than normal it's about 1 3/4 inches. It seems to have quite a high yoke too. Apart from the pockets I like it a lot. The sleeves are not tapered but not too blowsey AND the pleats lay open and flat and look totally cool they look just like Indy's to me. The deeper pleats that stay closed are a bad COW "Improvement" and the straps are more streamlined. Biit the front strap makes the pocket gape. In the first stage of me making it a beater I took a risk and washed it in the washing machine, it's come out undamaged but I will need to see it dry to see what else the washing has done. So no pics yet. I think this is going to make a cool "trooping" jacket. Henry bought it from another member... I'm trying to find out who. Pictures once it has dried.

wow, I can't wait to see it. Are the bottom of the enormous patch pockets really really round?

Sounds a lot like my first Wested that I purchased new in 1999. I liked that jacket quite a bit myself, and I have to say, there were some elements to the overall design that I always liked a bit better than the newer Wested offerings (mainly the design of the pleats, as you said, they lay open just like in Raiders and aren't overly deep at all). Though I have to say, if I had to pick between that "old style" Wested and the more current variations, I'd rather have the more current design. I NEVER liked the side strap layout or placement on the older Westeds, myself, and having had both the old (circa 1999) and new (well newer, circa 2003) Westeds side by side, I think, even with the deeper pleats, the newer design is much better all around. Still, I've often wished my original Wested had fit me better so I wouldn't have had to sell it. It was my first "real" Indy jacket and I wish I had been smart enough to hang onto it. If I ever come across an "oldie" in my size, I might just have to spring for it, for nostalgic reasons. ;D Anyways, glad to hear you like the new / used jacket, KT! Can't wait to see some pics! -GCR

wow, I can't wait to see it. Are the bottom of the enormous patch pockets really really round? Yup, *really* round! GCR: Henry had it for a year and the previous owner 4, I have a feeling it is older than 2002 though, so there might be an owner before that... perhaps we should start up owners records books for jackets. . Like cars.

Nice! You outbid me on that jacket - which is probably for the best as it's really a tad small for me. I have to say, I rather prefer the older design, although those pockets are a little large.

Sorry about that Nick we seem to have ended up bidding against each other on a number of things... though you usually win the whips! This jacket ended up being so cheap i couldn't resist.

If you get sick of it let me know Tell me more about the washing machine treatment!! I never thought you could put a leather jacket in a washing maschine!! I will be putting some jackets up for sale. One of my first Wested's was too big for me, but I held onto it because - well, it was one of my first Westeds. After I bought my 7th one, I started thinking it was time to either get rid of the ones I did not wear. I really liked the one that I bought first. It was predistressed cowhide. I put it through the washing machine and then the dryer (with heat!!! ) to shrink it a bit. Needless to say, it would have been better if I had taken a look at it from time to time and pulled it out earlier. Now it is too small. It is really soft and I always thought that thin cowhide draped well. I still love the jacket though. Putting it through the washer isn't that horrible on it's own. I cannot recommend the dryer with a good conscience unless you are trying to shrink it a bit. Pictures will be coming as I put it up for sale soon. This is stupid, but if you look at the picture below, you can get an idea of how the color came out in the washer too. It is the jacket all the way on the end that you can just see a small piece of. Like I said I will post more later... FYI, left to right, they are predistressed cowhide, lambtouch cowhide (I think), authentic Italian lambskin, goat (not the new thin stuff, either), another authentic Italian lambskin that I gave my wife and the latest dark brown lambskin that I got from Platon.

Are these going into the classifieds or up on ebay? Is your predist. cow really so similar in colour to the other jackets or is that just an illusion?

There I was thinking SEVEN! and then I realised I'm about half way there myself! Pagey: I'd been hearing of guys wasing their £4-500 Aero horsehides to accellerate break in, and, knowing that hot water can get rid of shine I thought I'd experiment on this one. I washed it o the hot wash with detergent and fabric softener. The lining became a bit lighter and the leather loss most of it's shine and got all the wrinkliness you can see in the pics However, certain parts, notably the parts used at the sides showed significant white 'bloom' I have a feeling this is the 'plastic' sealer layer of the leather reacting to the heat and moisture, it doesn't really respond to Letap but did mostly disappear with a liberal wipe of surgical spirit. (which leads me to believe it's some sort of plastic).

I will be putting them on my site first for a few weeks, then if I still have them, I will put them on eBay. When I post them on my site, I will also post here in the classifieds a day or two later. The predistressed is tough to really see in that picture as it is a tiny section of the yoke panel and collar that are visible. No, it looks much more beat up and the color is nothing like the others. For what it is worth, I take a size 40 regular.

That jacket looks fantastic. The color is incredible. I still prefer the dark brown over the authentic,....seems to be the concencus here as well. No matter if the original was the lighter authentic brown, most people don't have lighting specialists following them around to help them get "the look". I like getting the look the easy way,..wearing the dark brown. 'Blues

I have to agree with 'Blues, here. That's an amazing looking jacket, KT!!! It looks great on you! I really love the texture of the leather on some of those older Westeds, and the depth of the back action pleats looks great as well! I wish Wested would still make the action pleats like that, I think the pleats on my current Wested are too deep. I agree 100% with IB on the whole color issue, as well. While I'd still like to get my hands on an "Authentic" brown jacket, I've always liked the looks of the dark brown more, personally. Thanks for posting these pics, KT! A good jacket always looks best when it's on someone, rather than laying flat on the floor. -GCR

I love how wrinkly the storm flap stitching is. My newest wested lamb(from last fall) has a storm flap that is so flat it looks as though it has been ironed. Your storm flap looks much more Indy. And those large pockets might be SA depending on the scene. Not Indy in the Temple accurate, but perhaps accurate to this pic at least. i38.photobucket.com/albums/e132/jcg60625/j2006.jpg

KT, that jacket looks really good on you man! I actually think the slightly longer sleeves really help out by adding the cool wrinkles on the arms. The color is great too, and your gear is really coming together nicely. BTW, are those some of your new "KT Special" pants? Ken

Ditto what others have said. KT, that jacket looks like it was made for you. I'm realy digging the wrinkles and worn look. This is one of my favorite Indy jackets I've seen -- seriously. Steve

Still waiting for samples of something "pinker' but these will do me fine for now! Quite pleased at how the flaps look. And in retrospect I could have gone tighter on the butt measurement! (ok, too much information!) Personally I think there look better than Magnoli's but I'm biased! Old Navy shirt too. I love how wrinkly the storm flap stitching is. My newest wested lamb(from last fall) has a storm flap that is so flat it looks as though it has been ironed. Your storm flap looks much more Indy. You can probably accellerate the appearance by washing it! The pockets don't bother me now. They don't look crazily big when I'm wearing it it think. Thanks for the pic support . I'm surprised at how different this jacket looks on me compared to on Henry. Yes I abused it and bunged it in the washing machine and also gave it a light wipe down with denatured alcohol. Have a look at this pic, it's hard to believe it's the same jacket.

Yeah, I would say that's a dramatic improvement from when you first got the jacket! We'll just ignore the way the KT pants fit your butt.... and any comments you made about it. Woops.... better ignore this comment as well then. ;D Nice work, Ken

Fantastic!! I'm glad you won the auction, as the jacket wouldn't have looked nearly that good on me, being taller. The way it fits you looks SO Raiders - just makes me realise that my own jacket is too small (well, I guess i knew that anyway but i keep trying to convince myself it's not..)
