As stated in the diary "inquisition" thread, I got myself a diary replica from "philbirt" who regularly has one on auction on ebay. It is a printed replica.
It is not a high quality replica and it is advertised that way...note from seller : "Please note that you will not be able to read some of the writing. If you are looking for a diary with clear, legible text on every page, this is not it. Most of it looks great, but there are a few pages where you can't read the text. The images look fantastic!!"
Those facts are true and the seller is honest enought to warn potential bidders. The diary is rather small too ( 3 & 5/8s inches by 5 & 3/8s)
I decided to buy this replica because I just can't get my hands on a genuine looking one...they quickly become out of my price range and I have to abandon the auction...I'm not about to pay $200 (or more) for a book replica ! Some sell for more than $300 !!
This replica is well put together but the lack of quality is in the printing, most of the text is blurry, (as are most of the 10 included inserts) the color of the pages (some are repeated) varies from yellow to grey even to olive green ! And it is printed on glossy paper !?
If it would have been printed on regular paper, it would have been possible to re-write over the printing to clarify the pages with the blurry text.
At least the cover is genuine leather...BUT of an orangy tan color and not at all distressed. So I darkened it using dark shoe polish and aged it using sand paper, mostly on the corners. (I forgot to take pics before I applied the aging process )
What fascinates me about this prop is not this replica itself, but to realize how much time and efforts were put into making the original movie prop to look like a genuine labor of research... only for a few pages' short screen time.
The pictures of my replica.
Aged leather cover...
I also tried to age the edges of the pages...
A view inside.
Seeing those pages I could almost hear : "Fursht, the breath of god..."
The map with no names...
Adolf's signature is written with pencil (by seller), not printed.
The roman numerals insert with the pages depicting the library in Venice...
The only "not-blurry" of the 10 inserts...
A few of the nicest pages in the diary replica...especially the ones with the stained-glass window of the Venice library...
The replica looks surprisingly good on those pics even if you can see the differences in the pages colors. The angles in wich I took pics also eliminated reflections caused by the glossy paper.
So, puting aside the quality of the printings and the pages' color variations, it will make a nice addition to my collection.
