An Indiana Jones-style story is about to come true as scientists excavate a lost city shrouded in legend in the jungles of Honduras.
For centuries, travelers and locals have shared legends of a lost city - where a God is said to have fathered half-human, half-monkey children.
Now Honduras’ President Juan Orlando Hernandez has announced that a dig is to begin - in partnership with Colorado State University archaeologists.
The so-called ‘City of the Monkey God’ was supposedly sighted by explorer Theodor Morde in 1940 - but he never revealed its precise location, and later committed suicide.
Last year, researchers found the remains of a lost civilisation, including stone sculptures and the remains of a civilisation unseen by human eyes for a millennia.
Morde was told by Honduran Indians that the city’s Monkey God had fathered half-human children in the jungle.
Researchers have found 52 sculptures at the sites - including what is described as a ‘were-jaguar’, a half-human, half-animal figure.
Christopher Fisher of Colorado State University said that the site was pristine, and nearly unlooted, and described the find as ‘incredibly rare.’
