Well I got a call a week ago from Jenny at Hatsdirect telling me that my customized Akubra Bushman was ready. The only problem is, I never ordered one. I had discused it on the phone with Hatsdirect a couple of months back, but never decided to actually go through with it. They must have thought I was placing an order, but I really just wanted to know more info about the bushman. So, there you have it. I have another hat. BEHOLD!!!!

Wow, that's a bushman? If I didn't know and I was asked to guess, I would have bet money that your hat there was a regular Federation with a slightly trimmed down brim. But now that I know it's a bushman, I can kinda see some subtle differences in the overall blockshape of the crown. Either way, it's still a fine looking hat! So what are the specs on this puppy, anyway? Crown height, brim specs, and all that? And how does it compare to your regular Federation and your Camptown, etc? -GCR

That's a great looking hat. You must have ordered it subliminally. I was thinking that the Bushman had a bound brim.

But really a cross between brown and gray. The brim used to be a large round bound brim. I cut it down to 2 3/4 in on the sides. I like the brim height and block shape of the bushman, and the color, ribbon, beaver felt, and wonderful sweatband of the camptown. here's some comparison photos. Those are all some sweet looking fedoras you've got, Kap! I have to say, as far as color goes, I think I prefer the Camptown for an Indy lid. I actually like the color on all three hats, but right now, in terms of which color I like best (regardless of Indyness), I'm partial to the gray Federation (probably because I have been waiting so long for my gray AB ;D ). I think the brownish-gray of the Bushman does set it apart nicely, though. As for blockshape and crown height, my vote goes to the bushman. I like the lower crowns myself (the 5 1/2 inch variety) and the height on that bushman looks great! Felt-wise, I can't knock the wild-hare felt that Akubra uses...it is seriously tough stuff. I don't know much about the Camptown's or what sort of repuation their felts have for holding their shape over time, but if there is indeed beaver felt in that blend (it IS a blend, right?), then that should help. All in all, those are some fantastic hats, my friend! And you've got an AB coming to you soon, as well? That will be quite a collection, Kap! -GCR

Ken and GCR, thanks as always! As for the camptown, it's a: 10XXXXXXXXXX Beaver felt. I think that may mean that it's a blend. It feels much softer than the coarse Akubra felt and it does what I want it to do. (I can pretty much mold the brim as if there were a wire in it). The Akubras are a little bit stubborn. Yes I do have an AB coming, but I also have an AB deluxe on order as well. I really really hope my collection ends there. ;D

I actually got curious earlier and decided to check out the Camptown website. Here's what they said: An Illinois Brown beaver/rabbit blend hat body of moderate thickness to take styling and hard use with ease. Then again, it also lists the price for the "Fieldmaster" at $175, which is about 30 bucks more than you paid, right? ;D Considering that price range is dominated mainly by pure rabbit felts, I'd say that's a hell of a deal for a beaver/rabbit blend! Anyways, I'm sure you'll enjoy your AB and AB Deluxe once they arrive. The AB is a great hat, no question...but for me, the AB Deluxe was IT. Everything was just right on that hat...I've never had a hat that was easier to bash, and better yet, easier to bash Raiders style. Have you had any word from Steve on an ETA for your AB? I'm looking forward to seeing some new pics as the collection expands! -GCR

Is it just me or does that hat look dead on for Indy's traveling hat?

No Dirk, I was just about to write the same. It's spot on!!! My felter has the same color (only that THEY call it brown instead of grey), but I'm not sure whether to order this or the one the nazi wears in Raiders - after the great feedback on the one I made for John, this would be interesting as well Regards, Marc

However, if I had to chose between a brownish gray (even a dead ringer SA color) and more of a true grayish gray, (like the color of the gray AB Deluxe G-MANN has), my vote would be for the true gray. I've got 5 hats in the brown color spectrum already, so this is just personal preference for me. Of course, knowing myself as well as I do, I can say without a doubt that'd I'd probably buy one of each. ;D -GCR

Though the color of the Bushman is indeed nice and might make a good optional color for an AB Deluxe... I would highly suggest using the gray you made John's hat with. That color was dead on to the travel hat and the Nazi's hat as I believe them to be the same one. It was a real beauty, no matter what. Go gray! Ken

I don't know. It could arrive today, it could arrive next month. I pm'd Steve on monday, but he hasn't responded. It shouldn't be long. When it arrives, you know there will be pics though! Another offering from Marc! Time to get a second mortgage. ;D Seriously though...my vote is for felt like G-MANN's. This brownish gray may have worked as dressy for Indy in raiders. But Looking at my bushman, it looks too dusty a color to go well with a nice suit.

I'm with you, Ken! I think the color of G-MANN's hat is dead on for the clipper / DC stairs hat. I also think that it's the same hat (or at the very least, the same color / style) as the hat worn by the Cairo Nazi. I just think that the "Travel" hat sometimes appears to be a bit more on the grayish-brown side, in some shots. Similar to the color of Kap's new bushman. My point is simply that, even if the color of the bushman was somehow discovered to be 100%, dead-on, SA...I'd still rather have a hat the color of G-MANN's gray ABD. -GCR
