I just got myself a copy of the movie SECRET OF THE INCAS (1954) starring Chuck Heston. I never saw the movie before, but have read about it a few years back (on the Raider.net I think) and was very curious to see the movie as it is said to be a major inspiration for Raiders. Since it is not available anywhere, I kept watching on ebay for an "unofficial" version to pop up, and luck struck last week...it was delivered today and I'm gonna watch it...right about now.

That's a rare find. I saw a commercial for it many, many years ago on a local cable channel. They even played the Indy theme for the commercial. I remember seeing Chuck in a big hat with an A-2 type jacket. Seems like he had a small plane and I vaguely remember him going down a rope into a Well of Souls type place. I can't say for sure. It's been about 20 + years. Please give us a review when you can!

I think the other big influence for the look of Raiders was a film called China with Alan Ladd. That's also next to impossible to find. I can't understand why these aren't on DVD. Both of these films feature major stars and many lesser films from that era are on DVD now.

I watched it last time it was on TMC. It was pretty cool, and you can absolutley see where S.S. and G.L. were inspired by it. Makes me wonder if they have anything to do with keeping it out of circulation, lol. 'Blues

The movie was very fun to watch. Definately an influence on Raiders, with exotic locals (shot on location) the ancient Inca artifact to recover, using clues found on a miniature model of the Inca city (of Machu Picchu) and using a trick of light to find the exact spot once there, the outfit of the main character. (and not the only time Chuck Heston wore a fedora and leather jacket...remember "The greatest show on earth"? The very first movie S.Spielberg saw in a theatre. ) The main characters even use a inflatable yellow life raft to reach their destination after the plane ride (inspiration for a TOD scene?). The only thing lacking in the movie was action and maybe a better score. I was suprised of the quality of the copy, I bought it on ebay and the seller was in the U.K. so I was anxious to see if the DVD was really a "region free" disc and it is. The image and sound quality is almost of "old movie restored on DVD" type, surely the best "unofficial" movie I have bought so far. Definately worth the $7 I paid for.

This is a movie that my aunt taped from TV and put onto a disc for me, but I still haven't gotten around to watching it. Curator Rick loves this movie and even has some original clothing from the movie.

Sadly, the star of the film, Charlton Heston, passed away this weekend. Another one of my heroes is gone.

It's always entertaining to see just how many specific things they stole from previous movies, to make the Indy ones. Very nice work putting this together! Ken

Thanks for posting these pictures. That imagery is unmistakable. It always bugs me when people criticize other modern adventure films as Indiana Jones ripoffs. They never seem to realize that Indy was never original to begin with. He's just a summation of many great and nearly forgotten adventure characters and stories that came before. I wish the filmmakers would remember Indy's true origins and go back to that source material for any future movies. There's a lot of great material in old movies. Trust me on that one.
