I absolutely love reading these debates on here. Educational and entertaining while offering different opinions and disagreements done in a respectful manner. Personally I'm not an SA kind of guy(mainly because funding doesn't allow it). I'm more of a close enough for me until I can get something better kind of guy. IF I can ever afford a pair of Alden's I would probably go for the darker pair. Just my two cents though.

Hey, thought I'd take this moment to offer a comparison between my three pairs. Unfortunately I sold off my 403's a couple months ago, so I can't offer pictures of them, but here they are: The first offers a look at all of them together, and in my estimation the COLOR of the 404 is similar to the coloring of the 403, however the leather itself is very different with a waxy finish. In the middle is my new 405's, they have been worn for a week and a half and have been on a couple of hikes since christmas. Also, after I got them I gave them a coat of pecards and a hairdryer treatment to darken them. Sorry I never took pictures before the pecards. Last is a brand new pair of leather sole aldens, straight outta the box and nothing done to them. Haven't even laced em up yet. The second set allows you to get a look at each individual boot and their sole options.

Looks like Alden have started to realise that the darker colours are what people prefer and they can save money by bringing the 405's back into the dark side!!
Hmmm..Very cool if so!

As long as it's as dark as Indy's jacket. That's what I see in the movie, and what I haven't seen yet in any pic of the modern 405s, even in your pics, Fifth. Sorry for being Mr. Doubting Thomas, but at this point all I want to is to agree to disagree.
Doubting Thom... I mean... Steven

With all due respect, (once again) the movies were shot using lighting that was aimed at casting long shadows for the most part.... The few sections where the shoes are well lit, it's fairly easy to see that they are in fact a shade lighter than the jacket itself (The plane scene for instance), and heavily dusted...
If I shot my shoes in the same kind of lighting, they'd be darker..And if I'd worked on them as hard as they did in the movies, I'd be 99% sure of being able to get the colours locked onto what "you see"...
I'd agree that the modern shoes are a shade lighter than the original colour....No one is debating that at all..What I'm saying, is that mine are the same shade as the 403's, and that colour could be brought to match Indy's for the films with a little work...
If you want the original coloured leather, I believe Adventurebilt found the dye and used it for their custom Aldens? You should order from them....But you pay for it, almost twice as much, and that's a little crazy...Even for me...
Mine are the same as the 403's...That's perfectly fine for me....
And that's all I've been saying here...The whole "same as Indy" thing was your deal Steven...I won't claim the leathers are the same...I just stated they are the same as the 403's, as good as I can tell, and I liked the 403 colouring, so I was more than happy..
See what I'm saying?

Haven't been up-to-date recently about what's going on, but looks like Alden is making the 405's darker. Nice! Wish they had done that when I got mine. But about a month ago I finally coated my pair with Pecards and now they're noticeably darker than before. Still not quite as dark as I'd like them, but I say with another coat and some sun and it will darken more.
When I was deciding whether to get the 405's or 403's, I decided to get the 405's because that's the boot used in the films. Simple as that. Not SA in color, but I new they'd eventually darken. Also the lighting in the movies change the colors a lot, so who knows.

I agree with Noah....
I think the 405's where used for the KotCS too...In which case it'd be interesting to know if that IS the "405 colour" skin, or if they've just coated them so well that you can't see the difference...I'd bet it's the latter...They aren't the same shoes as he wore in Raiders, so that supports Noah and myself in the idea that you can easily darken the 405's (if needed) to be what we all see "on screen"....
The soles on the KotCS were looking rather new, so I'd guess they had the 405's bought for the film...Which may have meant they started out where we all did too..And just had the techniques needed to darken them enough to make them seem like the "OG" shoes...
Very interesting stuff in any case..

Yes the 405's were used in KOTCS too. I even asked Alden's if they were and they said yes. The boots were actually painted and distressed. So I'm not sure what color they were originally, but they could very well have been the pumpkin color! They also got it to the point where to me it looks like a different leather, but I think it's just the result of all the paint and distressing.

Thanks for doing all the legwork on that one for me then Sir!!
And yeah, I can see that being the case...But that further enforces the point that we're all shooting for dreams we can't hit without the use of paints...
The original colours do exist, and AB sells them..But they're so unusual that the price tag has to reflect that..And they're extremely expensive...
For the rest of us, we get the closest colour we possibly can (I'd assumed 403's would be best too) and work with it until we get a colour that we can live with..
I use my shoes daily for work, and I love the dark brown they are now...It also works wonderfully with my Indy gear, and still looks "Screen Accurate" to me, although not "Scene Accurate"....Which would take such severe distressing that I'd be ashamed to wear them in public...
It's a moving target, and we're all different, but the 403's/405's in the current colours are the closest we have to Indy, and on top of that, wonderful shoes to wear...Which makes all the sense in the world to me...
I think that's about all one can do in this hobby...
Without paint and distressing I mean.... ;-)

Yes well said. Basically if you'd like it SA as possible, you'd have to distress, and paint them (for CS at least). But I'm happy enough with my 405's and Pecards. 403's have a darker color to begin with, but you can always work with the 405's, even if it takes a while. No matter which one you get, they're great boots. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Hey all. I'm quite new to this, and I'm thoroughly enjoying this site. There are some truly smart folks here and I thank you for letting me add my two cents where warranted. I have a pair of 405's and I can't say enough about them. I've been searching for these boots for decades. I wear them for absolutely everything. I'm a flyer, and they're perfect for everything I've asked of them. I can't say enough. Old world construction, comfort, and built to last. I know that Todd's just came out with his new version, and I'm strongly considering getting a pair just to have another set (acquiring a second pair of 405's won't be appreciated by Mrs. Jock). However, if you get a pair, wear the hell out of them.. they're great.
