I recently managed to find one of the Tanaka Works 1917 S&W's for myself...Thought it would be nice to share some photos with people here who might be wanting one from Todd...They are rather lovely models actually..Living in Japan means we don't get the coloured tips as well, which makes life a touch easier.. Here are the pics.. And while the handle is the original pack-type and so not as cool looking as the original wood handles, it's decent enough for a model kit! Although I may replace it sometime if the chance arises... Regards..

I find the Box different then the one I got from todd. Yours has the picture of Indy on it while the one I purchase does not.

Yeah....I believe Todd requested that the boxes not have the Indy picture on the front, due to "difficulty selling them like that in the U.S."? Although I'm sure he can say why better than I can...All the Japanese one's still have the case with Indy on, but only for the 4inch barrelled S&W's...Not the 5's etc..Interesting I thought...

I'll have to ask "why." Would seem to me that it would be plus since this a limited market item. Who the heck knows. I'd buy just the box.

Probably because Lucasfilm are rather insane about Intellectual Property and would probably sue for a piece of the pie if the Indiana Jones picture was left on without "Lucasfilm" making it "safe"...LOL..Japan is rather a murky area as far as western law goes in general...So I'd guess that Lucasfilm can't reach them here...Todd on the other hand isn't based in Japan, so would need to observe US law with regards to Lucasfilms intellectual property rights...
The box is very cool though..

I think that's what Todd was alluding to when he spoke about the gun he'd helped Tanaka Works make...Yeah...Lucasfilm are heavy hitters for things like that sadly....In this case, I think it adds to the film, rather than "stealing" from them...But it's so legal now that he'd never win that in a US court...Sadly...
On the down side, we here in Japan get decent movies 6 months to a year later than the US, and pay about 4 times as much to see them...So...I reckon Lucasfilm get theirs from me either way...Heh

If your in Japan, you should go to the company and purchase just the box for $10 and sell me one for $20. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Excellent piece, Ben!! I love the finish. It's too bad Todd was forced to have Tanaka leave Indy off the box. I like your box a lot better.
Thanks for posting!

I can understand why Todd left the art off the box, but it really is a nice piece of art!
Awesome gun too. I can't wait to start on getting my Raiders gear together and especially looking forward to getting this pistol myself!
Very nice find Fifth!

How hard would it be to replace the colored tips for those of us in America?

I don't how hard it would be "Ameria" but here in the states I think it would be pretty difficult and not worth the time in my opinon. Painting is so much easier and it really looks good. Hope you know I'm just kidding about the spelling. Heck, half of what I write is mispelled. I haven't even mentioned my poor use of the English Language. Gailen

I don't know what you're talking about Either way, it's a good looking gun, and I'd love to have one. Been bitten by the poor bug recently, so I'll have to save for one in the future.

They really are a nice toy. I shot my nephew with it last week. Great fun. Scared the heck out of him.

Ben, Nice gun! I've never seen one with a "parkerized" finish. The box is also VERY cool. I think the grips that are on it look pretty good for plastic, but, wood looks and feels much better. You can get new replica grips directly through Smith & Wesson's website. Vintage ones are out there, but, can be pricey depending on the condition. Just make sure you get the grips for the "N" frame revolver. Smith & Wesson used the same style grips for some of the K frame revolvers, but, they are too small. but here in the states I think it would be pretty difficult and not worth the time in my opinon. Gailen, Actually, it's quite easy to remove the orange tip. Tanaka just dips the tips of their US bound guns in a thin orange paint. With a little acetone and a rag, you'd never know their was paint there.

Heya Kwad...
Yeah eh? The "Parkerised" finish was something I had asked for...So, officially it's a "Custom" model...(I liked the flat look myself...Just a personal thing)..
And yeah, the plastic grips it carries are decent enough! But I agree, I think the wood grips are the "thing" to have, and those might be the next on my "to-get" list...After the Aldens I just ordered for Christmas...(And after those...I'm probably having a year out of buying stuff...LOL)..
Regards..

I also prefer the flat black look. Tanaka's "blued" finish looks kinda off to me.
New pair of Alden's on the way, huh? Yep, you're going to have to let that wallet breathe for a while!

Yeah..I haven't seen Todd's up close, but his I think are rather better than the "standard" Tanaka selection? I'd like to have seen what he has...But yeah, I ordered on what I liked in gun design, and was rather chuffed with the result...Thanks for the comment!
And seriously...In the New Year, my aim will be rebuilding my bank account...
And darkening some lovely new shoes...Naturally.. :-)

It would have been super-cool to have the picture on the box, but not in the US! Major copyright infringement! Even the name "Indiana Jones" is a registered trademark.
Be careful with the parkerized finish - unless it's metal plated the acetone will melt the plastic. Mine are metal plated and acetone does not hurt it.

Copyright... Weirdly, because it is a drawing rather than an actual photo or original artwork, it may be covered under the 'caricature/parody' exclusions.
