Well, my wife suprised me with one of these hats today. She ordered me the normal size but they must run a little large. Are these known to shrink much? My Akubra is one size larger and it shrank down nicely. Otherwise I'll exchange it.

i've had my original downtowner for over a year and it doesnt feel like it has shrunk any to me , but i would switch hats everyday cause i would wear todds uptowner every other day . you may want to send it back and get the next size down , todd is good at returning and getting you what you want. have fun with that hat!

Yeah I think I will exchange it on Monday. I like this hat a lot, and I really dig the nifty box it comes in.

That hat looks similar in proportions to my Stetson. It looks great now, enjoy it! Steven

downtowner is only 79.95 , just put 20 bucks away each week or every two weeks and in no time you will have the money to buy one , thats how i did it for my stuff.

Tex. Is the crown usually that tapered? Or is just because it's not on your head?

And Manpurse, just to agree with Mark, money isn't hard to save up....Just find a decent job and put whatever you can aside until it's saved....It takes time but it's not impossible...

I saw it..
You mean you object to spending money on the hats? Well, then why not just buy a cheaper wool felt one that suits you? If you want the older (fur) felt hats you'll always pay more, and the quality is superior....I have three, different colours and wear them with a suit to work everyday...So they're not "convention" (never been to one actually) wear for me...But I've seen some guys who do so...
You're just buying a hat to wear at convention then? Do you want it to look "realistic" to Indy? Or just, "passable"?Because that will also make a big difference..
Should I take your post to mean that despite HAVING the money, you just don't want to spend it on a hat you'll only wear once?

I mostly wear my Penman but I wear one of my four fedoras every single day, anywhere, anytime! A hat should be worn and worn often, in my opinion. Wear it! OWN it! That's my M.O. anyway. I'm sure the Todd's is a good hat, but if it were me and I intended to spend $80, I'd go ahead and bring it up to the $150 or so that an Akubra Fed IV Deluxe costs. Whatever you decided on, WEAR the hat and make it a part of you. Cheers!

I have 3 hats and my Downtowner is my "rough wear" hat. I might not have got it but the price went down to $80 and while it is not my favorite I am glad I got it. Oh and yes it does have that taper but I like that as my others do not.

Manpurse i wear my downtowner just about everyday. i wear a t-shirt and jeans and the hat goes great with it . but to each his own . when i wore my first hat which was a dorfman pacific , i wore it and thought to myself "could i handle all the stares i'm going to get?" but most people were like "nice hat , just like indiana jones ' and now it's like second nature for me to wear the hat out in public .so if thats what you are worried about don't be . if you are worried that the downtowner is to much of a "costume '' hat , it isnt . it's made from fine fur felt.

While I don't especially like looking like Indy on the way to work, I'll always have a hat...Usually with a suit and waistcoat, simply because my school asks us to dress professionally and the hat suits the look perfectly... Now it's warming up I'm back to my Todd's jacket instead of a raincoat and jacket, but it's still elegant I think...No one say's "Indy!", although some may think it? Most just recognise that I like the look of the suit and hat, and that it works better than a suit alone, or the hat alone...
That's another reason I'd be careful about getting the "downtowner" I think...It IS an "Indy-hat", very Indy...But perhaps rather TOO movie like to carry off a suit and formal wear look...I prefer my Fed IV and my Adventurebilt for the role... So while Mark is correct in saying that it's not a "costume hat", it IS a movie hat...And somewhat too stylised for my personal liking...(That and the colour options as well..)..
Anyway....It really depends on what you'll use it for!

Patch. Your hat looks GREAT!!! My only suggestion is to tighten that front crease a little. But that's just personal preference Here are some updated pics, I took your advice RaidersBash.
