Are the Coyle's outdoor boots inferior to Alden Indy's? I'm a broke student, thus I've been highly interested in the Coyle's boots. Would you guys suggest these, or should I just save my money. Also can someone post some pic's of some broke-in (aged) coyle's boots if possible?

This topic is in the wrong section. A classic newbie blunder. Welcome to the Lounge! I've heard the Todd's aren't too durable. I hope Todd can make them more durable, even if that means the price goes up a little bit. Ciaran (Irish Indy Fan) should be able to shed some light on the subject. Steven

I have a pair of Todd's Outdoorsman Boots. For the money, they are pretty darn good. They aren't as good as Aldens, but they are worth the money IMO. I've had mine for 10 or 11 months, but I haven't worn them everyday, so they aren't well broken in. If you wear them often, I hear you will need to resole them somewhat quickly. Aldens are much better, lasting many years. I heard someone who has been wearing them for 11 years. But for your budget, I'd say go with the Todds.

Thanks for the responses and please keep them coming.
Noah don't you mind posting a pic of what your Todd's boots look like so far?

I have had both the Todds boots and the Alden Indys. After just a couple of weeks of wearing the Todds boots they started to fall apart. Then I got my Aldens and have worn them ever since. In my opinion the Todds boots are great for the costume. But the Aldens are great for every day wear.

Here's a pic of my Todds boots. I haven't worn them everyday, but so far they have held up. I think they're great, but the quality is not as good as Aldens. Like jnicktem said, Aldens is great for everyday wear, as they will last you for a long time.

So the general consensus is that Todd's boots aren't any good? Dang, I was planning on getting them and I would wear them somewhat often....guess I'll start saving up for some Aldens or Magnoli's boots.

Well, I'd say buy the Todd's now, and then save up for the more expensive ones. We didn't say they weren't any good. They're accurate, just not too durable. I hope Todd just makes the boots a little more durable in the future. It doesn't matter to me if the price goes up, as long as they're durable and they're cheaper than the other options. Steven

Yeah I guess I could do that..I mean I got some that are somewhat close enoughs, but I'd like to have some boots that are spot on. Any thoughts on the Magnoli's?

It's not that Todd's boots aren't durable, it's just they aren't as durable as Aldens. They're a great boot, and I really would recommend them, especially for your budget. You could get them now, and then save up for Aldens. That's what I'm doing. I plan on getting Aldens later. And Magnoli's boots are great too.

Since Magnoli's boots are cheaper somewhat, I may get them. I haven't decided yet exactly. I like how you can get different colors in Magnoli's to suit your taste than the "brick" color of the Aldens.

I say if you are just planning on buying the Todds boots just to hold you over until you can afford Aldens or Magnolis... then don't. Save that money for the Aldens/Magnoli. Otherwise you will just be throwing your money away.
Take it from someone that has experience with that. I bought so many things to hold me over until I got the same thing but higher quality. I wish I had that money back.

Jnicktem is right. If you buy the cheaper one now just to hold you over until you can afford the more expensive one later, it would be wasting money. But the reason I got Todds first was because I wasn't planning on getting higher end boots at the time. That was what I could afford. But now I do plan on getting Aldens.

over the past weeks, i've been looking for some good 'close enoughs' ive come across two boots from Aldo. 'Rodiguez' and 'Jeremyah'. www.aldoshoes.com/us/men/boots/casual-boots/80952553-jeremyah/28www.aldoshoes.com/us/trends/american-heritage/men/80837379-rodiguez/22Both are great boots. I've tried them both on at the local Aldo shoe store. Now, obviously they aren't perfectly screen accurate, but I think the 'Rodiguez' boot is a much more practical purchase then todds boots. Simply because the average indy enthusiast would prefer to use these boots on an everyday basis. With a quick change of laces, the 'Jeremyah' is an extremely close boot. It is also the closest (and cheapest) boot I can find that glows the alden indy boot aura. In the end when all the dust clears, aldens are aldens, todds are todds and 'close enoughs' are c'lose enoughs'. It's all controlled by the all mighty dollar... or euro.

Screamin' Wilhelm! Those boots look dead-on, only with the toe turned up! I'd want the Jeremyahs, but the Rodiguezes seem more in my budget, and they also have a more accurate color. Maybe one could get the Rodiguezes and have speed hooks installed on them.

I've been looking at those too and they are very nice. The Rodriguez looks practical for everyday wear with the soles.

i tried them on at the local aldo, both of them, and they were amazing boots! the rodiguez in paticular, molds with your foot as soon as its fit in. the dark leather gets a really cool lighter brown imprint of your foot.

Yes, they sound like cool boots. Also, does anybody else notice the similarity between the names of ALDO and ALDEN and also how they sell ALMOST THE EXACT SAME BOOTS? ;D Steven

Regarding the Todd's boots;
I've been wearing my Todds boots for 4 months now, and they seem to be holding up quite well. However, the heels seem to be the weak link in the chain. After only 4 months, mine are wore down quite a bit and have become delaminated from the sole. (I had to nail them down to keep them on) I plan on taking them into a cobbler soon to have the heels replaced and possibly have a half sole installed (which any good shoe repairman should have no problem doing for a relatively low price). So, if you are in the market for a pair of Todds, please take into account the price to have the heels replaced. However, IMO they are still worth the price as the rest of the shoes are well built and very SA.
On a side note, I had the pleasure of meeting Todd and his assistant at the COW summit. When I asked his assistant about the boots, she informed me that they will soon be going with a new manufacture. One bit of exciting news was she said that they were looking into making the boots better quality, and the new ones will have better soles/heels. She also mentioned that they were looking into adding actual goodyear welted construction (just like Aldens). I really hope that this comes to fruition as it would greatly improve the quality of their boots. Only time will tell.
The Aldo Jeremyah's appear to be a very good alternative to Aldens at a great price ($150 at the current discounted price) and appear to be very close to SA. However, some have reported that they are infact a bit taller than Aldens, which may or may not be a plus, depending on your tastes.

Here's a quote from General Frosty over at COW that offer an explanation for why most people think Todd's are crap: Steven Well maybe... I think it comes down to this... if you want a pair of boots to a costume party or just have a pair of indy boots for your gear that "sit there" then the Todd's are great... but if you over wear them then they WILL break, not if, when... Aldens (like penmans) are made to be worn. and will last a long time, a LONG time. I speak from having both the todds and the aldens. the todds broke after the 3rd time i wore them... granted it was at Disneyland where i was walking alot. But to me I feel like for the price of 4 of todds boots you can get 1 pair of aldens that will last longer than the four todds boots WHICH means the Aldens are actually going to save you money! WOE
