I think the subject line says it all. I need to buy a new general use suit and have been considering going with an Indy type suit. I like the three piece look and even the bow ties. Do any of you guys ever go for the professor look? I'd love to see any pics you're willing to post. Does anyone have any leads on a reasonably priced 3 piece suit with a vintage look? I know that's a tall order. Magnoli Clothiers produces some nice Indy suits but just too pricey for my budget.

Not really. I added a tweed jacket that I found at a thrift store and added that and a bowtie to my NH gear and came up with an awesome Pankot Palace gettup. I actually wore said outfit to a harness racing gala dinner all paid for by my gilrfriend's family. I had the respect of the older patrons, commenting on how smartly dressed I was for a 'young' person, plus my GF and her parents didn't even click that I was in Indy gear! Oh the difference an iron and a dry clean will make!

This is as close as I have to any sort of Indy suit: Okay, so that's not too close. But, with this dark olive suit or even the black one I have, the fedora really changes the look doesn't it? Ken

This is the closest I have to an Indy Suit and it's not that close. Cheers, G-MANN

Blues and G-Mann you guys look sharp in your suits and both go very well with your AB's. Of course I mean that in a non "Broke Back Mountain" kind of way. ;D You guys are a step further than me as well. I don't own any suits.....well that fit anymore. ;D

Nice shot, RB! (You too, G-Mann. You snuck that pic in while I was rambling on this.) It does. It's gotten to the point where I think a suit is incomplete without a fedora. (Weird?) I'm serious. I think a fedora capping off a nice suit says COMPLETE! Even in today's fashion. I'm sure the hobby's had some effect in that, but I seriously cannot think of a suit being finished unless there's a fedora with it. As for the Indy type suits, Havana, I only have a couple of modern suits, myself. The all-purpose charcoal, and a gray (patterned something or other) for bid'ness. I like the professor look a lot but they cost just a wee bit too much for me as well. There are still enough variations in the modern suits that they could be made to look Indy-suit like (add a vest, for instance) a bow tie. But the fedora's grown on me as a completor to a suit. In an un-Indy way.

Tone,
I'm with you man. I think the Fedora completes the suit. I have not worn a suit without a Fedora for over 20 years. Although I had been using brown for a long time the gray is a vast improvement with the blue suit. I think I have a vintage wool suit, Black, woven with brown and gray that the brown fedoras look great with. I'll see if I can dig it out of hiding.
Cheers, G-MANN

G-Mann, from the photo you posted it looks as if the ribbon on your hat matches the suit exactly! Does it, or am I off my head?

The ribbon is a actually black with a slight blue tint to it. It is really darker than the suit color but the super bright light is affecting it in the pics. "Blues lets take this guy downtown for questioning" Cheers, G-MANN

Thanks for posting those pics. Those are some jazzy suits. You look like you're ready for a night on the town at the Cotton Club or the Brown Derby. I think those suits demonstrate that modern suits can be made "close enough" with the right accessories (and attitude).

Except for some minor changes I've always been under the impression that normal business suits have stayed pretty much the same since Indy's era.
Can you imagine Blues and G-Mann showing up to your house wearing those hats and suits.....
"Excuse me." "This is Special Agent Blues and I'm Special Agent G-Mann and were from the Indy Lounge" "We'd like to ask you some question in regards to your Photoshop pics you've been posting."

How is this for a "sort of" Indy suit ? O.K. Bad picture ! You can hardly see it since it's black !

Actually, that's a pretty cool picture Stefana. I know the reason why you posted it was to show off your suit but still......
Maybe we should change the theme of the board to the Untouchables or something. You guys all look like FBI agents. ;D

Stefana, Cool, moody looking shot! The globe is an excellent touch, and.... the suit isn't bad either! Nice work, Ken

Very cool! Stefana, don't take this the wrong way, but you should have been an actor (if you're not already, that is.) You have a great look that easily becomes a perfect type for all eras and character types. Photographically, you can range from a comedic "Laurel" sort of quality to a downright mean mob boss very easily. And believably, too.

Thanks guys ! The globe is actually a...bar. You can see the bottles stored underneath, and the globe opens to reveal more bottles and glasses stored there. I'm flattered ! Sadly I'm not an actor, (wish I was) although I hear a lot of people say I should do stand-up comedy whenever I comment about "how annoying it is to do your groceries when you're in a hurry..." or stuff like that ! Are those, maybe, exemples of what you mean ? (although I only have 2 facial expressions: mean and surprised) The stefHAN SOLO pic doesn't count...it's just my face pasted on Solo's pic...But I did look like that in my younger days...when I still had hair !

Well, surprised and angry work. And also just "being". The right costume and suggestive setting and you fit in almost any category. For example.... (Actually you all look good in these suits. Might unfold a scene something like this....) "Nice work, fellas. So, it's the infamous Canyon and Fatima, huh? Accomplices of Pitfall Harry's gang." "We ain't part of no Pitfall Harry gang, mister. Let me ask you something. Do you and that goon squad of feds always snatch a lady off the street when she's minding her own business whenever you get the hankering?" "Hankering nothing. She'd a gunned us down if we didn't put on the charm to get that info out of her. Don't let her fool ya." "I don't know what you're talking about." "Yeah? My apologies. Guess we had it figured all wrong. Thought you two were Canyon and Fatima. Two dames mixed up with Pitfall Harry - rumored to be branching out into his own racketeering and bank robbery business." "Couldn't tell ya, mister. What's it to you? Way I hear it this whole district is on the payroll." "Where'd a nice girl like you get an idea like that? Let's see. Pitfall. Pitfall. Worked under Luceno Mustodini before going into business for himself. Still no idea?" "Not a clue. What say we get going now? Your fed boys gonna give us a ride back or do we get ta pay cab fare for this visit, too?" "Then you wouldn't mind a few questions from Mr. Mustodini?" "What? Here? W...wait a -" "- Canyon and Fatima. It's a big mess ain't it?...." "....Don't worry about that cab ride or any of this mess. We'll get you out of the picture. There's a driver waitin' outside for ya. You remember Johnny? He takes real good care of all my legal troubles and I want him to do the same for you two." "Detective. You ain't gonna let us go in that car?" "Well, bein' that you and her ain't the girls we're lookin' for, there's no need to worry. Those two would need serious protection. Sorry for the confusion." ...............
